Synopsis

Skate as the legendary Tony Hawk, or as one of nine other top pros. Work your way up the ranks by landing suicidal tricks in brutal competitions to become the best skater on the circuit. It's time to go pro. Pull off hundreds of motion-captured move combos on the fly with super-smooth controls. Nail insane airs, grabs, slides, grinds, kick-flips and landing tricks.

Gameplay

In Tony Hawk Pro Skater, you get to play as Tony Hawk himself at first and skate your way to new cities and unlock new challenges to show off your skating skills. At first you start off in an underground skate park testing your skills, but soon you'll be skating against other pros, and if you beat them you unlock them making them playable along with new areas to skate at, new parts for your board that don't upgrade your skills or anything, but only makes it look better or to your preference, and new clothes for your character. There are several different game modes to choose from that include a practice mode to test your skills freely, a tournament mode that is pretty self-explanatory, and a free mode where you can skate at any place you want, with any character and rules. Throughout each area in the game, there are also open/hidden "keys" you can pick up that will give you extra points in the end, and even unlock some things at random. If you collect all of them, you can even unlock a secret area.

Graphics

The graphics in this game are fairly decent with some objects very detailed, and others not so much. The more common they are, or in your face, the more detail they will have. The characters themselves look good as well, but could use some more detail in the face, as they look rather bland and blocky. The areas you skate in are fairly large and have a lot of objects lying around that also look great such as tables, rails, stairs, other skaters, and puddles of water that will have your reflection in it, to an extent. The game runs very smooth for the most part, with the exception of a few times during the tournament where you will get some pretty bad lag.

Controls

The controls are pretty basic here. The analog sticks, or D-pad, will control the movement of your character in all directions, the buttons will do tricks on the ground and in the air, and the triggers will control the grinding portion of said tricks, power slides/'brakes'. These controls only go for consoles, and the GBC version will be a lot more complex.
