Synopsis

America's coolest undercover cop and the crime worlds fastest getaway driver is back on the streets in Driver 2, follow up to the hugely successful Playstation game Driver. Like it's predecessor Driver 2 is an adrenalin fueled, high speed car chase through the streets of 4 cities, where you, as Tanner, infiltrate the criminal underworld, using your driving skills as well as your cunning to disrupt their plans.

Story

Driver 2 takes place in Chicago in the early 1950's after two gunmen storm a bar and are attempting to murder someone. The wanted man on these men's hitlist is Pink Lenny, a money launderer who works for a high-ranking mobster, Soloman Caine. However, Pink manages to escape the shootout through the back of the bar. After a few days, an undercover police officer by the name of John Tanner, and his partner, Tobias Jones, are called to the morgue to examine the man Pink was talking to in the bar. He was a Brazilian man who worked for a different high-ranking mobster by the name of Alvaro Vasquez. Then, John and Tobias are sent to investigate a warehouse that is operated by Vasquez but turns out to be a trap set up by Soloman. After a brief shootout, they manage to escape and along their way find documents from Cuba. On his way home, John is ambushed by one of the gunners from the bar. He then learn from Solomans bodyguard, Jericho, that a bounty has been put on his head forcing him to go to Havana, Cuba.

Once in Havana, John and Tobias learn that Alvaro is using Havana for his weapon deals to undermine and eventually take over Soloman's businesses in Chicago. After learning this, they set out to destroy his business and whilst on this secret mission witness Pink boarding a ship to leave the country. Afterwards, John and Tobias learn that Jericho has also arrived in Havana with the intent to kill all of Pink's men for their betrayal. After he is successful, John and him form a truce and head to Las Vegas to find Soloman.

After they arrive in Las Vegas, they are greeted by Soloman. Once John and him are alone, he infiltrates their mob by telling Soloman that him and Tobias were working for Pink and were betrayed. Soloman then assigns them with numerous operations and to track down Pink and kill him. After a few operations John eventually picks up Pink and has to deliver him to the airport, where an ambush should be awaiting. Unfortunately, this plan fails and Pink boards the plane safe and sound. After, Soloman then tells John to find and destroy Alvaro's deliver trucks before they reach their destination. Whilst doing this, they capture a few men and interrogate them learning that Pink has fled to Rio De Janeiro.

Upon arrival in Rio, they learn that Lenny has already knew they were coming for him. So they go to his hideout in the southern part of the city just as he is trying to escape via helicopter. During his escape, the helicopter is running low on fuel making them fly low. So John and Tobias follow him in a vehicle trying to shoot him down. After they have done that, they find Pink wounded in the debris and capture him. Once captured, they return to Chicago to give him up to authorities.

Gameplay

In Driver 2, you get to play as an undercover cop at first but soon find yourself working with mobsters, which, you are doing undercover as well. Throughout the game you will travel to several different major cities hunting down criminals at first, but eventually hunting down degenerates. Each city is very large in the game and leave room for a lot of exploring. Although you play as the same character the entire time, you take on several different roles and outfits that fit the area. There are also dozens of vehicles you can drive that are found in each city that are appropriate to the area. Since it is a free-roam game, you can do missions at any given time or just drive around crashing, killing, or fleeing from the police. You are allowed to get out of the vehicle as well, but need to be in a vehicle to start a mission. There are also only a few weapons throughout the game, and most will require you to beat several missions to unlock. Each mission has several different objectives you will need to complete, all whilst using a vehicle to get to each destination, and sometimes needing the vehicle to complete. Most of the missions are fairly simple just needing to deliver something (sometimes very far), fleeing the police, transporting someone, or perform a simple drive-by or assassination, though most of the time your partner will do the shooting, hence the name Driver. With that being said, it's much more of a racing style game, than a shooter, although you can shoot in free-roam, which isn't a separate mode but just all in one.

Graphics

The graphics in this game are very nice and well done. Nothing looks out of place, characters and vehicles are very detailed to an extent, environments are gorgeous, and the cities are phenomenal and looks spot on. Each city is always fully loaded (although it looks odd in the distance) which, surprisingly runs extremely smooth and never experiences any frame drops. The cut scenes also look excellent with lighting and shadowing perfect. All of the action looks great as well, everything from explosions and shootouts to background things going on such as fights on the streets to civilian car accidents that don't look scripted. The only thing that may turn you eyes are away is the area in the distance. It is very pixelated and ugly, almost looking like a blob of colors until you get close enough.

Controls

Since it is basically a racing game, the controls are very simple. Triggers control the vehicle when inside primarily gas and breaks, analogs control the steering, and the buttons control the gears, reverse, and the characters camera angle. Whilst outside of a vehicle, they are still very simple. Triggers shoot and aim, analogs control the character, and buttons will perform sprinting, jumping, crouching, and going prone.

I'm sorry but this game was probably one of my most favorite old games there was. It was so fun when I was a kid.
