My friend is looking at upgrading his PC a bit, saving up to about $1000AUD. He's currently planning on getting a 970 with a 4K monitor, which I'm not too sure if that is the right move at the moment.

Any decent suggestions? Keep in mind im in Australia, so the prices will be a bit higher..

Single 970 and a 4k panel? Not a great move IMO. I mean, it'll play less demanding games easily, but AAA titles are going to struggle at higher settings so you'll be turning stuff down. 1440p would be much wiser but even then, I highly doubt you'll be able to get a nice rig with a GTX 970 and 1440p panel for $1000 AUD. You're looking at much closer to twice that price for a decent 970 rig with a 1440p panel, unfortunately.

If he's upgrading and re-using some components, then we'll need to know his current specs to be able to help.

Those are this current specs. Any other suggestions would be great, doesn't have to be a 970 + 4K, this is just what he wants, but I want to offer him the best he can get-type thing.

It's a bit over budget but it's probably the most logical upgrade tbh, IMO anyway. 290X 8GB is the best card you'll get for 1440p for anywhere near $500. Next best GPU would be 980Ti for $1k. Add an SSD asap.
