Synopsis

You are the armchair General in charge in Sega's TOY COMMANDER for the Dreamcast. In this 3D action-filled adventure you'll need to marshal together your army of kiddie playthings and thwart the plans of the opposing evil toy army. Hours of gameplay combat are here for your enjoyment as you execute devastating attacks against well-entrenched targets laughing as you go. Control miniature vehicles and troops in a cartoon-inspired house containing eight sprawling rooms over three varied floors. Don't be lulled into complacency by the sweet smiling faces and shiny colors of your tiny enemies these teensy-weensy soldiers are armed and dangerous and looking to blow you sky-high. You'll need to plan carefully for victory as you wage frenzied warfare in a flooded kitchen packed with tiny subs, a child's bedroom, hallways, the living room, and more. Command tanks, planes, helicopters, trucks, jeeps, and battalions of troops in a cute but cutthroat battle for supremacy. In the TOY STORY-meets-PATTON mayhem of TOY COMMANDER, the warfare is filled with games as well as guns.

Story

Toy Commander takes place in a young boys (Andy) house after he receives new army-themed toys for Christmas. Since he has gotten these new toys, he sees no use in his old ones and throws them in the attic. They then unite to rebel against these new toys and start to take over the house. The leader of these frustrated toys, known as Huggy Bear, designates one boss to guard each room. You can defeat every boss to reach Huggy, however it is not necessary and will just make it more of a challenge to finish. You must defeat at least one boss though or the final mission will end immediately. Once you reach Huggy and defeat him, he will return to Andy's side. The final cut scene shows Andy in an airplane being awoken by a stewardess, implying it was all a dream.

Gameplay

In Toy Commander, the player must complete missions in order to get to the next room of the house. These missions utilize vehicles to complete certain tasks. Their are five types of vehicles: Race cars, tanks, airplanes, helicopters, and transport vehicles which have no armament. The bosses you beat also join your side along the way to help fight Huggy. If you beat every mission in their respective rooms under the time limit, you unlock a secret mission that allows you to control a snail in the backyard. Doing this also unlocks unlimited missiles.

Local multi-player allows two to four players to go against each other in three different game modes: death match, capture the flag, and cat and mouse. The first two are self explanatory but cat and mouse is a tag-like mode. Only one person is the mouse and you are rewarded points for not getting hit. The longer you are the mouse, the better.

Graphics

Though some people may find it too colorful and bright, the visuals of Toy Commander are very nice. That shouldn't be a problem though because you can turn off the lights in-game by shooting the light switch. Everything is recognizable in all the rooms from the cat meowing in the kitchen to the coat hanger in the bedroom. The rooms are fairly large and you can see the other side of all rooms with ease (remember, you are a toy). There are no glitches whatsoever and everything looks solid. Some stuff may look a bit over-pixelated, but at least frames won't be dropping from too much action going on.

Controls

At first the controls may be very tedious and hard to get used to. It's pretty complex, but once you get used to it, it's nearly perfect for how the game is designed. They could have made them a lot easier to use or less buttons needed.
