Synopsis

Half-Life 2 the sequel to Half-Life, is a first-person shooter video game and part of the Half-Life series. Developed by Valve Corporation, it was initially released on November 16, 2004, following a protracted five-year, $40 million development cycle, during which a substantial part of the project was leaked and distributed on the Internet.
The game was developed alongside Valve's Steam software. It introduced the Source game engine and, because of Steam, was the first single-player video game to require online product activation.
Like its predecessor, Half-Life 2 was met with critical acclaim. It was praised for its advanced physics, animation, sound, AI, graphics, and narrative. The game won 39 "Game of the Year" awards and the title of "Game Of The Decade" at the 2012 Spike Video Game Awards. Over 6.5 million copies of Half-Life 2 were sold at retail by December 3, 2008, making it a best-selling PC game (not including the number of sales via Steam). As of February 9, 2011, Half-Life 2 has sold over 12 million copies.

Plot

In Half Life 2 you play as Gordon Freeman who is part of the resistance. The game takes place decades after Half Life. The game starts off with you talking to G-MAN in a hallucination. G-MAN begins to tell Gordon that the "hour has come again". Gordon wakes up soon after finding himself on a train to city-17. The station is filled with combine forces and he is there to meet up with the resistance members. He slowly learns that both the city and the rest of the world is under control by a ruler by the name of Doctor Wallace Breen who is apart of the Black Mesa Research Facility. The aliens, known as the Combines, are actually coming up with the horrific plans and are controlling Doctor Wallace. These aliens roam the earth by portals formed by the "Black Mesa Incident". Now it's your time to stop these aliens from controlling the earth!

Gameplay

The first time I played this game I was in awe at how much fun I had. Now 11 or so years later I still play this game from time to time and it really brings back good memories. In this game there are no cut scenes what so ever. This game is lets you play through the eyes of Gordon Freeman and it sticks that way throughout the whole game. City-17 is complex and full of detail and hopelessness. As you play you can see people hiding in the darkness wanting this war to end. Aliens and military roam the city causing destruction and chaos. The campaign took me roughly 25+ hours to complete and it really is an interesting game. The city is presented to you and you are free to roam around. I did have some frustrating moments not knowing where to go on certain missions, but figuring out where to go next was the best part. The game doesn't guide you to the next checkpoint, you have to be the one to make all of the decisions which is what I really like about this game. There are numerous characters throughout the game each with their own amazing personality helping guide the story a long smoothly. Finding nice people in this world of terror and chaos is hard and very rare, so once you run into them it's a sigh of relief. There aren't a whole lot of weapons in this game, but it does certainly not take the fun out of this game at all. Finding ammo, health, and other things are sometimes scarce so it puts a smile on your face when you finally get your hands on some. Gordon's gravity gun can be used to pick up and toss anything that is not bolted to the ground. Picking up shrapnel or other objects and propelling it towards enemies is extremely satisfying and fun. Not only can the gravity gun be used as a weapon, but can also help you with missions and puzzles as well. Using the gravity gun to pick up furniture to guard your body from the on coming bullets or to even throw at multiple enemies is what I find unique about this game. I mean come on, who doesn't love killing some zombies and aliens with a blade that is floating in front of your gravity gun? Every time you play you will find something else new that you have never known before hand which makes me coming back for more. Vehicles in this game are great and are needed at points to travel fast throughout the city. And exploring the world is so fun because you honestly never know what you are going to find. Battles throughout the game are heart pumping action packed fun. Your allies are screaming and the enemies are slowly closing in. It makes it extremely intense including when striders and ships come and force you under cover. Using whatever ammo you have left to destroy the enemy once and for all. Headcrabs and other enemies have different and notable aggression and emotions throughout the game making them each unique. AI in this game are pretty smart and can be pretty tough to take down. Sadly there is no multiplayer which really should have been added as it would have been great. Overall, this is one of the best games I have ever played story wise and more. I would definitely recommend picking this up if you have not already.

Graphics

As this game is fairly old, the graphics do not compare to the graphics on current games today. But, at the time the graphics of this game were one of the best. City-17 is stunning and spectacular to look at. It is not odd at all to be left in awe looking around the city as it just looks beautiful. Certain streets are vacant and lifeless while others are sprung with life as people live there for hiding. Buildings are left destroyed as well as cars and other scenery. You can really tell the fear that many of the civilians went through when the war and invasion started. People's belongings and memories of families that once lived there can be found when when entering apartments and houses. Plants and the surrounding environment look great and have awesome realistic effects. Animations on all characters is by far the best I have seen. Characters move fluently and each person in the game has there own animation to them. Everything from explosions to gun fire looks incredible and there are tons of detail in not only the city, but guns, vehicles, and many other animals and scenery. Overall, the graphics are one of the best there is at the year it was released and it still better then a few games released today.

Controls

The controls in this game are simple and sort of easy to understand. RT is to shoot not only your weapons but to use your gravity gun too. LT can be used to pick up objects with your gravity gun and or shoot grenades from your gun when you have the ammo. B is to crouch, but you cannot go prone in this game. The d-pad is used for certain things such as using the flashlight. They do have a tutorial on how to use the controls as well as many options to change the layout of the stick and buttons. I have never really had any problems or glitches while I was playing except for some delay at some points. The controls felt very fluent even when I was doing jumping puzzles and such. Overall the controls are great and do not cause any problems what so ever.
