Synopsis

Stanley had always been a mindless drone, working 9-5 everyday of his adult life without question for a corporation he knows nothing about. Sitting in an office reading and carrying out orders sent to him via his computer monitor. But one day the orders stopped flowing in, and therefore, for the first time in his life, Stanley decides to remove himself from his cubicle to dig around for answers.

This game is an interactive adventure using the source engine from Valve's "Half-Life" series, available in two different versions, the original mod (2011) and a remake released in HD quality (all images from the latter version).

Gameplay

The concept of The Stanley Parable is to give the player a range of choices during the course of the adventure which will affect the narration, the ending, and ultimately your experience of the gameplay in general. These choices manifest themselves right from your first step. This is because the adventure is constantly narrated by a voice announcing Stanley's next action before it is done - meaning you as the player may choose to disobey what has been said (much to the embarrassment of the narrator). As you choose to contradict the words of the narrator, he will adapt to what is being done, and begin addressing you directly. I personally love the idea of this, as in playing TSP, you come away with a personalised experience, rather that a monotonous, uniform ending that you share with every other player.

Obviously in the interest of people who may want to play this game, I won't share details on the potential paths you may follow during the game, and how the narrator responds, as that is something you will have to find out! There are also numerous situations you may find yourselves in, and I'm not even certain i have experienced them all!

Graphics

As previously stated, there are two versions of this mod that have been released. However, as we're dealing with the HD remake, I can't say there are any problems graphically. Bearing in mind that this game is not designed to be a mind-blowing visual experience, complete with crazy SFX and streamlined image mastery. Being a simple game with not too much environmental interaction, as expected, the graphics do nothing more than get the job done. There are a few additional extras in the HD remake that give the impression of a slightly more thorough approach, with small things like computer logos being clear on the tiny office desktops, and joke mugs and stationary scattered round the various offices, which is a nice touch.

Controls

There isn't much to add in this section, as again, the emphasis of the game is really the interactive experience, you are almost just a passenger control wise, simply moving Stanley with the WASD keys (or the arrow keys if preferred), and E as an option to interact with certain items, like picking up small items, turning on office computers etc. but none of these items are needed to progress through the story.
