Synopsis:

The world of Castle Story takes place on flying islands, high above an infinite ocean. The islands are made of voxels, cubes made of various elements, which means you can dig, carve and build anything you can imagine in the landscape. Digging underground to gather resources, stacking bricks on top of each other to build a wall or even tunneling through a mountain is all possible and even necessary to keep your Bricktrons safe. Carefully designing your castle not only requires creativity and imagination, but thanks to path finding AI and physics simulations, Castle Story has layers of strategy and depth on top of an otherwise free-form sandbox experience.

Story:

Welcome to the world of Castle Story, were you can let your creative mind come alive in multiple ways! Use your bricktrons to customize and create your very own castle as you grow and defend your home from the monsters lurking in the darkness. Make sure to use your bricktrons wisely as you build and defend your home. Build great defenses for your castle or maybe have some of your bricktrons mine rocks or cut down trees for lumber. Anything is possible when you put your mind to it. Become a strong leader for your bricktrons and help them survive this dark world.

Gameplay:

Castle Story is a sandbox survival game that throws you onto a floating island to build your very own castle and defend it from the monsters that live on the island as well. It will be your job to control your bricktrons ever move and make sure they are doing what needs to be done to survive. If not you have a very slim chance of surviving against the monsters that seek to destroy you. The only thing holding you back in this game is going to be your creativity. You can build your castle anyway you would like to and it does not always have to be a castle either. You can build really anything if you can put your mind to it. Overall this game has a good concept behind it and is fun the first time through, but the game play can get a little repetitive and boring at times and it can also be a bit frustrating at moments as well.

Castle Story is fun to play for a little while. This would most likely be one of those games you play once in a while as well. With this game being in alpha stage there are needs of improvement that the developers have been taking there sweet time at getting to and with there not being a ton to really do it was a bit frustrating realizing I just wasted money on this game. When you start out you will spawn with a blue crystal in the middle of a island and you will see a few bricktrons (the yellow people) standing around doing absolutely nothing as they wait for you to command them. Once you get into it you will have your bricktrons doing multiple tasks at once but you need to make sure to be working on defending your crystal otherwise the monsters will try to destroy it. The monsters spawn in waves when the timer hits zero, then you must protect your crystal at all cost or otherwise you will lose. It does take quite a long time to build a really nice castle or building to help defend your crystal. With this said it can be quite frustrating to put a lot of time into something and realize a hour or so later that you really have not accomplished a ton. With this game being alpha the developers had a good idea started and a lot of potential of it becoming a really good solid game.

Graphics:

Castle Story has overall decent graphics that I personally think fit the game really well. I really like the look of the game on quite honestly it is one of the reasons I bought it because it looked like something different not normally seen in a game. The detail to such small things is outstanding and impressive. The bricktrons move without problems and perform tasks excellently. I have not noticed any type of clipping in the game what so ever and I think the colors of the game mix well together too. Overall the graphics are very catchy and fit the game excellently. It is one of the better things about the game that I really do enjoy looking at.

Controls:

The controls for Castle Story are not the easiest thing to learn, especially the camera movement this by far was the worse thing for me and I found myself pausing at times just to try and rotate and move the camera angle so I could see what was going on. The controls are really not all that basic and if you do not play the tutorial you are going to have some serious trouble playing this game. Speaking of the tutorial this is also not very easy to understand and learn the controls from. I found the tutorial very frustrating at a few moments when it involved moving the camera around and I still do not know all the controls yet. Overall I think the control layout for this game is somewhat poor and the tutorial they give is helpful for basic stuff but can also be hard to understand exactly what they are wanting you to do.

Overall:

Gameplay: 7.5/10
Graphics: 9/10
Controls: 6/10
Overall: 7.5/10

Extras:

For a game that raised over 700,000 dollars on Kickstarter you would think that this would be a huge game that would standout among the rest. Sadly at the moment it does not. I do not recommend purchasing this game at this time until it is possibly fully released.
