Synopsis:

Metro 2033 Redux is the definitive version of the cult classic Metro 2033, rebuilt in the latest and greatest iteration of the 4A Engine for Next Gen. Fans of the original game will find the unique world of Metro transformed with incredible lighting, physics and dynamic weather effects. Newcomers will get the chance to experience one of the finest story-driven shooters of all time; an epic adventure combining gripping survival horror, exploration and tactical combat and stealth.

Plot:

In Metro 2033 Redux you play as the character Artyom who is a 20 year old man who survived a nuclear war which occurred back in 2013. Because of the nuclear war that occurred which affected most of Russia, many people had to live underground in the metro stations for the rest of their lives as most of the animals are mutated and are very dangerous. Not only are mutated animals roaming the vast lands of Russia, but radiation also prevents people from stepping foot onto the land as well. Artyom must travel through many territories throughout the game in order to protect his home station. Not only do these territories contain mutated animals, but they are also occupied by the Nazis and Soviets which will stop at nothing to end your journey.

Gameplay:

This is a pretty decent first person shooter / survival horror game. The campaign can last you 10+ hours and it has it's moments. At some points throughout the campaign I was startled by the monsters as they tend to pop out at you when you least expect it. Throughout the campaign though I did have some trouble trying to figure out where to go in order to progress throughout the game. Using the compass to try to find the next checkpoint didn't really work to well in my opinion. It would always lead me to inaccessible areas in the game and I had a hard time finding the next checkpoint. At certain points the AI seemed buggy and they wouldn't attack me at all. The character animation for cut scenes and in game characters are pretty good. Throughout the game you will have to scavenge for weapons, ammo, filters, etc as they tend to be scarce and without them it will be very hard to progress. Also, you are able to customize your weapons that you currently have in hand as long as you have enough bullets to pay for it. Throughout the game you tend to be in areas where it is quite dark and you will need to use your flashlight in order keep moving forward. The dark areas and strange noises also help set the tone for a horror type of game. There is also isn't much of a HUD on the normal difficulty which makes it hard to tell when you are about to die or when you need to change your filter on your gas mask. In addition, there is also karma based choices in the game which will give you different endings. But, this game still is really enjoyable and I had a great time playing it.

Graphics:

As this is a next-gen game the graphics are amazing. The landscape in Russia looks crisp, clean, and beautiful. I did have some problems with the cut scenes though as at some points it would look really choppy and the animations for the characters weren't to great either. There is also some cool things that can happen to your character as well once you explore the land. For example, when you shoot mutated animals blood splatters onto your screen and you are able to wipe it off. Or when traveling in tunnels you will have water droplets fall across your mask as well as spiders and flies. These little things help create an amazing visual experience throughout the game to make it more immersive for the player.

Controls:

I'm the type of person that is use to a fast sensitivity, but, when turning the sensitivity all the way up in this game you still turn a bit slow in my opinion. Throughout the start of the game notifications help you out so you can get comfortable with the controls. Though, while I was playing this game I still had some trouble trying to figure out what buttons did what. You do not get much customization when it comes to selecting which buttons on the controller does what which was kind of disappointing. As a result, the controls are decent and I don't see the typical gamer having much difficulty with it.

This was one of those games that I found when I was out looking for games that I had never heard of and the cover looked cool, so I actually ended up renting it and falling in love with it! This game was truly amazing to play through, and was actually so good that I couldn't wait to play Last Light (also an amazing game)

Nice review over all, thanks for bringing back good memories into my life
