Synopsis

After witnessing the slaughter of fellow officers, Sebastian is ambushed and knocked unconscious. When he awakens, he finds himself in a deranged world where hideous creatures wander among the dead. Facing unimaginable terror, and fighting for survival, Sebastian embarks on a frightening journey to unravel what's behind this evil force.

Gameplay

The Evil Within has plenty to offer gamers when it comes to it's gameplay. The game contains 15 pretty lengthy chapters for players to complete, depending upon their skill levels. An average player can expect to have the game fully completed within 15-20 hours of gameplay time. There isn't really much to offer in terms of a second run through of the game as there isn't anything different, but it can be more challenging if desired. The game play life is a decent one that will have players wrapped up for a decent number of hours.

In game players find themselves constantly scavenging for resources in order to stay alive and stand a fighting chance, as any worthy survival horror game should be. This can be more or less prevalent based upon the difficulty the player chooses. The game offers players two different difficulties to choose from in the beginning: Casual and Survival. However if players manage to beat the game on Survival they will unlock two more challenging difficulties: Nightmare and Akumu.

As with the majority of games that fall under the survival horror genre, players will find themselves in pretty unsettling environments for most of the game. Players can expect to be in abandoned buildings, old churches, sewers, dark corridors, the wilderness, and many other ambient locations.

As for the combat the game doesn't force players to fight every foe they come into contact with, and if they choose to do so can stealthily eliminate their foes. Players have scarce ammo so are forced to rely mainly on head shots in order to deal with enemies efficiently. Players can choose from a handgun, shotgun, sniper rifle, grenades, an agony crossbow, and more to deal with their foes. The game has several bosses that prove to be rather challenging and take a bit of effort to defeat.

There is a mechanic within the game that allows players to "upgrade" their character and weapons to a certain degree. Players throughout the game are able to collect jars containing green gel that is used for this very purpose. Upgrades include more health, sprint time, reload time, accuracy, damage, carrying capacity, and more. This allows players to have a sense of control in how they wish to play the game. The upgrading is done within the game's "safe spot" where players are able to save their game. The "safe spot" can be located by going through various broken mirrors within each chapter of the game.

Plot

The Evil Within has a very twisted and confusing plot players follow along with. They play as a detective by the name of Sebastian Castellanos. Castellanos is sent to a mental hospital along with two of his partners Kidman and Joseph, in order to investigate a mass murder of some sort. While investigating the crime scene the detective is knocked unconscious, and soon wakes up to be running for his life. Detective Castellanos then must embark on a very terrifying journey and face many horrors in order to relocate his partners and figure out the many questions he has. Along the journey Castellanos is faced with the antagonist known as Ruvik, who is a very scary character that seems to be from a different dimension based upon his abilities that allow him to appear and disappear at any given time. Players may actually find themselves seeking answers early on, as the story is a little confusing and unexplained in the beginning. Many of the scenes and happenings within the first part of the game seem to have no explanations at all and leave players stumbling for answers they don't have, and they don't get these answers until about the halfway mark of the story.

Graphics

The Evil Within provides pretty outstanding graphics for the most part. However there are various cinematic portions of the game where certain background images don't load at the appropriate times. This is easily noticeable by players and can be a little frustrating considering the game is on the newer generation of consoles. As far as everything else is consider it's all pretty great. Enemies have very unique depictions to go along with all the characters within the game. The game does a very good job of displaying gore at any given chance it is able to. I can not emphasize enough how much gore is prevalent within the game at all times, but this isn't necessarily a bad thing, unless of course you have a weak stomach. Players can expect enemies heads to completely explode into a bloody mess if shot correctly. With very minimal flaws here and there the graphics with the game are definitely a plus.

Controls

The controls are fairly simple to understand and learn for players. The game does an extremely good job of providing a tutorial for each individual action a player will need to perform, at the exact time it's specifically needed. This causes players to feel comfortable throughout all parts of the game as they aren't left guessing how to throw their grenade at the horde of enemies running towards them. The game allows players to map certain items to their quick action buttons (also known as the directional pad) for easy access as well. When players want to open their inventory the game slows time around the player down so they have plenty of time to get what they need done. Overall the controller layout, presentation, and feel of the controls are as close to perfect as they need to be.

Final Verdict

I would say that The Evil Within is a very good pick up if you're a fan of survival horror games. It presents players with a pretty compelling story and pretty decent gameplay for the most part. However I feel as if the price $59.99 is a little to steep to justify a purchase. Players are only given at most 20 hours of play time which I don't feel is worthy of $59.99. Overall it's a pretty great game but I would suggest waiting until the price drops or there is a sale with DLC included.

This game actually looks quite nice and if I had the money laying around and the friends and girlfriend could come over and play it with me, I think that this game could be a lot of fun.

Also, nice review OP. I hope to see more reviews from you in the coming days!

This is a great review. My problem with this gane was that it wasn't logical. A mutated human would take 4 grenades under his feet and keep killing you. To me that just frustrated me to a point of not wanting to play it. However, if you're into the resident evil games and want an intense game with plenty of jumpy parts, this is your game.
