Synopsis
The game follows Ajay Ghale, a young Kyrati-American of Nepali origin who returns to his native country Kyrat to spread his deceased mother's ashes. Kyrat was an autonomous state of Nepal in Himalayas which was ruled by separate Kyrati Kings before monarchy in Nepal. Kyrate is derived from Kirati, a collection of Himalayan people originating from Tibet boardering Himalayas. Kyrat is currently under Nepalese control after the abolition of the monarchy. He finds the country in a state of civil war between Kyrat's Royal Army (now Northern Nepal Army) led by the country's eccentric and tyrant king Pagan Min and the Golden Path, a rebel movement fighting to free Kyrat from Min's oppressive rule. The choices Ajay makes will determine the fate of Kyrat. This story has been inspired by the ten years long Maoist insurgency in Nepal to abolish the Gyanendra-led monarchy.

Plot
You begin Far Cry 4 by being interrupted during your bus journey, and are abducted by the vicious leader of Kyrat, Pagan Min, and his Royal Army. You find out that you are playing the game as Ajay Ghale, son of Mohan and Ishwari Ghale. We learn that your sole purpose in Kyrat is to scatter the ashes of your late mother, Ishwari at Lakshmana, later finding out Lakshmana is actually your sister, and not a location which you originally thought. You are take to lunch with Pagan Min and one of his governors when he has to leave the room for 5 minutes. You are told to wait where you are, and make sure to try the Crab Rangoon. Now that you are alone, your mission is to flee Pagan's palace before he returns. You are aided by a commander of the Golden Path, Sabal.

The Golden Path is a rebel force which was originally formed by your father, Mohan, before he died. After fleeing the palace, freeing hostages and emancipating territory previously held by the king, Pagan Min, you become a symbol for the Golden Path, who in the two decades since yourself and your mother fled Kyrat have been fighting for their survival.

You now must overthrow king Pagan Min by first attacking his three regional governors. The first governor is De Pleur who takes care of opium production and runs Pagan's torture chambers. The second governor, Noore, gives you De Pleurs location because her family have been kidnapped for torture. After taking out De Pleur, Noore becomes your primary objective. Noore controls the poaching and prostitution rings of Kyrat for Pagan, but she is also a victim of his viciousness as he had her family tortured and killed by De Pleur. You fight through Noore's arena and can decide to take her out, or not. However, if you decide not to kill Noore, she commits suicide upon finding out what happened to her family. With the first two governors out of the way, your new objective is to kill the third governor and Pagan's trusted general, Yuma, who is obsessed with uncovering the secrets of Shangri-La, a magical and harmonious valley.

The Golden Path becomes divided by it's two commanders, Sabal and Amita who both want different things for Kyrat. Sabal wants to reinstate Kyrat's tradition values, even though they may be out-dated world views. However, Amita wants to progress and turn Kyrat into a rich country whilst getting rid of it's traditional values, this means heavily relying on the drug trade. During the course of the game, you have to make decisions between Sabal and Amita's plans, depending on who you personally agree with. Your decisions affect which direction the Golden Path will go in.

As you proceed through the game, you assist the Golden Path in taking control of Southern Kyrat and eventually, Ajay is contacted by a CIA agent, Willis Huntley. Huntley offers vital information against Pagan and his Army for the rebels to use. In return, Ajay must assist in the assassination of Yuma's lieutenants. After killing several of Yuma's lieutenants, Huntley admits to Ajay that the lieutenants were in fact undercover CIA agents and when the CIA deemed Pagan Min non-threatening, Huntley was sent to take out the agents. Ajay is betrayed by Huntley and handed over to Pagan Min who then takes Ajay to Yuma's prison located in a mountain.

Once in Yuma's mountain prison, it is your objective to escape. To do so, you must make a grapple to climb down the mountain and you must fight your way down. Whilst escaping, you learn that Yuma began to despise Pagan due to his affection of your mother, Ishwari. Upon escaping Yuma's mountain prison, Ajay and the Golden Path decide that it is time to push into Northern Kyrat. After doing so, you attend a meeting with some rebels when the Royal Army arrive with the king himself, Pagan Min. You take out the soldiers and chase down Pagan, killing him which is when you figure out that the man you killed, was in fact just a body double and that the king himself is still alive. After this, you watch a broadcast of Pagan Min, he gives up Yuma's location and confirms that he is alive. Now, you go after Yuma, the last of Pagan's governors.

As yourself and the Golden Path get closer and closer to the Royal palace and overthrowing Pagan, tensions rise between commanders, Amita and Sabal. You are forced to make a decision between Amita and Sabal. Whoever you choose, they ask that you kill the other, which you can do, or let them go. Either way, only one commander will remain as if you do not kill the other, they leave Kyrat forever. Now united, under the leader you chose, the Golden Path begin an attack on Pagan Min's fortress. Ajay then pushes on alone to Pagan's palace to take him out, whilst the rebels hold off the military at Pagan's fortress. Upon entering Pagan's palace, you find him at a dinner table, ready to eat where you are given a decision, kill him then and there, or eat with him. If you decide to let him live, he explains to you that you, Ajay, are in fact the true king of Kyrat and that when he originally kidnapped you from your bus, he simply planned on handing Kyrat over to you. You then take your mothers ashes to Lakshmana, which turns out to be your half sister, not a location. You place your mothers ashes next to your half sisters and leave. As you leave the shack that you place your mothers ashes in, you see Pagan enter a helicopter, he shouts "All choices have consequences Ajay! I'm giving you Kyrat, but I'm keeping the helicopter" and he flies away. You can choose to shoot down the helicopter, if you wish.

The game has an alternate ending, where if you decide to stay in Pagan's palace during the very first mission and choose not to escape, he eventually returns. He takes you to the same shack that your half sisters ashes are in and explains to you that your father sent your mother to spy on Pagan, but instead, they fell in love and had a child, your sister. Your father proceeded to kill your sister and drove yourself and your mother out of Kyrat. You proceed to place your mothers ashes next to your sisters in the shack and upon leaving the shack, you enter the helicopter with Pagan Min who says "maybe now we can shoot some goddamn guns". Don't worry, this isn't game over, you do still get to continue and play through the campaign, of course.

Gameplay
Far Cry 4 consists of 3 game modes. Single player, multi-player and co-op.

Single player is the main game mode in which you play through the campaign missions as explained in the plot above, and several side missions. When not participating in
missions, you are allowed to free roam the entirety of South Kyrat, as well as Northern Kyrat once you have unlocked it. There are hidden relics, loot chest, hundreds of propaganda posters, journals and letters hidden throughout Kyrat that you can find. Not only that, but there are several animals that can be hunted, and plants that can be found. Plants, just as in Far Cry 3, can be used to craft syringes which can be used for medicines and such. Animals, as well, just as in Far Cry 3, can be
skinned and their skin used to craft several different items. Some animals are violent and will attack you, others are not and will run away. By using arrows and blades to kill animals, you are rewarded with twice as much skin which means you can craft items more quickly, though it is of course easier to kill an animal with a shotgun, rather than stabbing it to death. You also earn skill points which can be used to unlock skills, such as being able to ride an elephant and being awarded extra health slots.

Controls
The controls are similar to the majority of other FPS games. This makes it easy to get used to the controls which is fantastic. Vehicles are a little hard to control at first but you quickly adapt to the vehicle controls. Other controls, such as for wing suits, gliders and helicopters are pretty easy to control once you understand how they work. Also, elephants are pretty easy to control when you ride them, it is similar to driving cars. Combat is pretty simple, with it being like other FPS games. Weapons are mainly easy to use, though if you are a beginner to the Far Cry series, the bow and arrow may be slightly difficult to get used to. Just to add this, on some version on other platforms you can change the layouts of the buttons,so don't feel as though you have to stick to the default layouts. Customization is high for the controls in this game... But there isn't a good reason to change them as the default one is brilliant.

Graphics
I was pleasantly surprised with the graphics in this game as they were fantastic. On PC especially, the graphics are amazing but even on consoles, the graphics are still very good. I was finding myself confused from time to time during cut scenes when I thought I'd switched to a movie by accident. A lot of the people and animals in the game look very realistic, even plants and vehicles at some points. This game is definitely great for it's graphics which you will notice as you travel the map. The transitions between cut-scenes and gameplay is very well thought out, and made the overall experience better. I mean, everything down to the leaves on the tree's are very good, honestly one of the most graphically pleasing games I've played.

Rating
Plot : 9.5/10
Gameplay : 9/10
Controls : 9.5/10
Graphics : 9/10
Overall : 9.25/10

I have to mention that the only reason I haven't rated this higher is due to the game being buggy at release, but the majority of that has been fixed now. If the game was fixed before release, then it would have scored higher.

Fantastic game isn't it. I've played through the campaign and am considering starting it again, just going for 100% completion first, still have a few of the notes and what not to find. I found the bow and arrow difficult to get used to but once I got used to it, I loved it. My current weapon set-up is signature AK47(Warrior I think it's called), the recurve bow, sniper rifle with silencer(can't remember which exact sniper) and for sidearm, I switch between the autocross and grenade launcher.

Hope you enjoy the game as much as I did*.

I actually just beat this game a couple of days ago and I personally really enjoyed playing this game. This game was a lot of fun and the story was better than what IGN reviewed it to be in my opinion.

Nice review as well!
