Gameplay
Shadow the Hedgehog is a platform game that incorporates the use of some action adventure, as well as some third person gun play. Like previous Sonic games, basic gameplay involves running quickly, getting rings. Each mission is labeled either "Hero," "Dark," or "Normal." Hero involves fighting along side Sonic, Dark involves fighting along side the Black Arms or Doctor Eggman. There are a possible 10 different endings to this game. Each level has cut scenes that further the storyline and several levels also feature a boss battle.

Plot
Shadow the games titular protagonist was created fifty years before the game's events by Prof. Gerald Robotnik in a space station known as the ARK. Robotnik was trying to unlock the secrets of eternal life by orders of the government, to create the "Ultimate Life Form." He succeeds that feat when he creates Shadow who is able to harness the powers of the Chaos Emeralds. He was assumed dead in the Sonic Adventures 2 game, but later was found to be alive and was reintroduced in Sonic Heros, but he had amnesia that persists even through the events of this game somewhat.

Story
The story within this game is quite different that most Sonic characters storylines. Shadow has a dark past that he can't quite remember, as well as having no problem taking another being's life unlike all the other Sonic characters. This game is dark, but not to a point of it earning a rating past E10+. This game is violent and all, but it isn't like it is that bad. In this game Shadow only recalls two things for sure, his name, and his gruesome escape from the space station, the ARK. Shadow wonders if he is an android as other games have hinted, and he figures out thanks to Black Doom that he must find the Chaos Emeralds to find out what happened to him and remember what he has forgotten.

Graphics
The graphics within this game are lacking to say the least. They focused more on the storyline of this game rather than the visual portions of it. The game doesn't look bad or anything, but it doesn't look that great either. Nothing to write home about, but also nothing to write a complaint about. The game's graphics are about average for it's 2005 release date.

Controls
The controls of this game match that of most other Sonic game's within the series. It also shares the controls of most other third person shooters. The controls of this game are very solid and make for an easy and fun gaming experience while playing. There is only a couple of default controller layouts, but, the main default layout is fine for most average players.

Multiplayer
The only multiplayer within this game is the local co-op. You and a friend can take on this game together in a split screen perspective. I personally think that this is the best way to experience this game with another friend. Lastly, this game's co-op is one of the more fun co-op experiences within the Sonic gaming series.

Ratings
Gameplay - 7.5/10
Plot - 8.5/10
Story - 7/10
Controls - 8/10
Graphics - 7/10
Multiplayer- 8-10
Overall - 8.5/10

Personal Note: This game is awesome to say the least. Shadow is my second favorite Sonic character, being only one behind Knuckles. This game is fun and sticks close to the Sonic storyline that is told about Shadow and where he came from and how he came about to be a Sonic character that has stuck around through the years. This game is older, and therefore cheaper than other games, and if you are a fan of older games, or Sonic games you will like this game. Well worth a purchase in my own opinion.

This game honestly confused me when I had first gotten it. After beating Sonic Adventure 2 Battle and seeing Shadow sacrificing himself, I was confused when playing Shadow the Hedgehog on how he was back (apparently he didn't die, Eggman saved him as he states sometime in the final boss battle.) Before I had known any of that, I was a little off story wise. However, the game was definitely one of my favorites. The different mission paths you can take depending on how you play the story, some levels were challenging and rather long and the story in general giving more of Shadow's past, I truly enjoyed playing this game. Wish this game would get an HD remake and be brought over to Xbox One/PS4 and PC.
