Synopsis
God of War is set in an alternate version of ancient Greece, populated by the Olympian Gods, Titans, and other beings of Greek mythology. With the exception of flashbacks, the events are set between those of the games Chains of Olympus (2008) and Ghost of Sparta (2010). There are six locations explored, including fictional versions of the real world Aegean Sea and ancient city of Athens, and fictional locations of the Desert of Lost Souls, the Temple of Pandora, the Underworld, and a brief scene on Mount Olympus.

The Aegean Sea setting includes a mass of shipwrecked vessels. Athens is a war-torn city under assault by Ares, the God of War; beyond the city is the Desert of Lost Souls, a vast and windy desert of ancient ruins. The majority of the game occurs in Pandoras Temple, which is chained to the back of the Titan Cronos, who crawls through the desert. The massive temple, constructed by the architect Pathos Verdes III, is filled with traps and monsters, and has three sections dedicated to the Titan Atlas and gods Poseidon and Hades, respectively. The Underworld is a fiery realm with spiked pillars full of souls and flaming versions of previously encountered enemies. Athens is the scene of the final battle before a denouement on Mount Olympus in the God of War's throne room.

Gameplay
God of War is a third person hack and slash, action-adventure game set in the times of Greece and has a lot of symbolic ties back to Greek Mythology. The player gets to play through the game as the once great captain of the Spartan army, Kratos. Within this game there are a lot of mystical enemies, weapons, and story-lines. Also, within this game there is quite a bit of combo based combat/boss fights, platforming, and puzzle games to boost value to the game-play. There are quite a mix of enemies within this game including: undead soldiers, harpies, Medusa, Minotaur's, gorgons, wraiths, and many more. There are also chests full of different colored orbs throughout the game that all do different things such as green replenishes health, blue replenishes magic, and red serves as money for new upgrades.

Plot
Kratos is a warrior that serves the Greek gods of Olympus. Flashbacks reveal that he was once a powerful captain of his beloved Spartan army, until he was defeated by a barbarian king. Facing death, called upon the true God of War, Ares to aid him and his men in battle, Ares then bonded a pair a chained metal battle swords refereed to as the "Blades of Chaos" to Kratos. With Kratos's new found blades he then decapitated the barbarian king. Kratos waged war at the behest of Ares, eventually leading to an attack on a village occupied by worshippers of Athena, another Greek god. Ares had secretly moved Kratos's family members including a wife and child into the village he was killing at Ares's command, and this led to Kratos accidentally killing his wife and child. Ares did this because he felt without his family to hold him back, this would make Kratos the perfect warrior for Ares, which in turn, actually made Kratos turn against Ares and other gods. Before he could kill everyone in the village, an oracle of the village cast a curse on Kratos to have his skin be bonded to the ashes of his dead family in which he had just murdered, turning his skin bright white and earning him the nickname, "The Ghost of Sparta."

Story
The story within this game is actually quite interesting and fun. They mix in a lot of Greek Mythology, and if you're a fan of than sort of thing, you'll be a fan of this game. They keep the stories of Greek tale telling pretty accurate except for the fact of Kratos now being involved. However, the way that they portray Kratos along with the other Greek stories fit nicely together and make for a really great game. It is entertaining and fun from start to finish and doesn't really have any down points of no interest through the game. You play as a super warrior fueled by rage at the gods for making him kill his own family, and you really get to see that through this game. You get to see how a mortal is just as strong as gods when they have a purpose or meaning behind whatever it is they're trying to get accomplished, which in this case is revenge against Ares and any other god that had something to do with the deaths of his family.

Graphics
The graphics in this game are actually really lacking in my own opinion. They could have made it a little more gritty and dirty. The game seems a little TOO clean for a game that is supposed to be set back in time and be about warring gods, and deserts, and bloodshed. The character graphics are lesser than they should be, not putting enough detail into muscle tension, voice, or overall creativity for most of the characters. However, with all of that being said, them having to keep close to Greek stories might have hindered their creativity in the fact that they had to keep it close to how the stories of the Greek's describe the gods/characters.

Controls
The controls in this game are actually a little difficult at the start. They use a mildly weird control scheme as a default, and it differs from other games in it's same genre. However, once you've played the game for a little while and you are used to the controls, they actually flow pretty fluidly with this game. They use button mashing combos and break neck speed attacks, and the control setup that they chose to use, even if it's a little different than others, it fits nicely in my opinion.

Ratings
Gameplay - 8.5/10
Plot - 9.5/10
Story - 9/10
Controls - 7/10
Graphics - 6.5/10
Overall - 8.5/10

Personal Note: This game uses the stories from Greek mythology and makes them a lot more bloody, all without altering the stories themselves that much. You also get to play as a mortal that shows the gods what it means to be a human. It really spoke to me and showed me how powerful a race/one person can be if they set their mind to it. Also, the whole story-line of Kratos vs. the Gods is actually quite fun, well worth a play if you haven't played it. It is one of the best Greek mythology games that I have played, if not the best.
