Game Information
Name: Boom! Tanks
Genre: Strategy
Release Date: September 2013
Developers: Codemasters
Publishers: The Codemasters Software Company Limited
Platform(s): iOS

Synopsis

Command and upgrade some of the worlds most powerful tanks and crush the enemy beneath your tracks in a quick-fire new world of armoured warfare.

Plot

After an unpredicted event, ruthless military factions took control of the land. You work for an agency specialising in armour warfare. You're put through countless missions to defeat these ruthless factions and restore peace. The first faction you take on is DIE HEART, they have seized control of oil reserves in North Africa. As this is the beginning, the battles and opponents are a little easier, however you'll quickly find out that they become more difficult as you progress.

Gameplay

Boom! Tanks places you in command of a tank capable of total destruction, you are required to battle many opponents throughout the globe. You are given missions and daily tasks from the 'War Room', you can then select the missions you wish to play. The main gameplay of the battles is you starting on one side of a map, and your opponent on the other, you then drive towards each other - lock on and fire. When you first begin, you are given a standard tank, however throughout the game you earn in-game currency, this is obtained by successfully completing levels. The in-game currency can then be used to purchase upgrades for your tank, these include; the main gun, ammunition, armour, reload timing and the accuracy of the tanks shot. Some missions require for your tank to be upgraded to a certain way, or they are pretty much impossible to complete. This is how the game gives you an incentive to play the side mission in order to gain enough money to pay for these upgrades. The more you upgrade you tank, the more the upgrades cost, however continuous playing doesn't make the upgrades cost seem that huge over time. You are also given the option to purchase different models of tanks and personalise them with any colour/pattern of your choice (that is offered). When entering new battles, it requires you to use some of your valuable gas. Once you run out of gas, you are required to wait a set amount of time before the gas bar refills itself. If you are tired of waiting, you are given the constant pop-up option of purchasing premium (VIP), this gives you significant boosts after completing levels/missions and even a free tank if VIP is purchased within 48 hours of first playing the game. Overall the gameplay is quite fun, however it can become very continuous and repetitive quickly. If you're looking for a quick boost of fast-paced tank action, then this is for you. However, if you're looking for a long singleplayer campaign tank game, unless purchasing VIP or waiting for the gas bar to refill, this may become boring for you. The battles within the game are incredible and offer some great entertainment, and a substantial amount of fun playing.

Graphics

The graphics of Boom! Tanks are very nice for a iOS app. The maps you battle in look very unique and interesting, each with their own distinguishing features. When you take out opposing tanks, the bullet impacts are there and with the final blow, the game slows down your bullet and shows a very nice impact with the tank being destroyed. The same happens for yourself when being destroyed by enemies. Within the individual maps, you constantly see planes flying overhead in attack formations, as well in some maps having anti-AA guns shooting upwards into the sky at the planes. This adds a great overall feel to the game, giving it a military feeling along with a feeling of being in modern warfare with battles being fought on multiple fronts - land and air. The 'War Rooms' layout is done very nicely, giving a classic military feel of the screen. You are given gridlines over a map, with a constant red beam hovering over in a horizontal direction. All of the buttons within the game have a unique glossy feel to them and are detailed nicely.

Controls

The controls of Boom! Tanks are a little more in-depth than most other apps. You are required to first lock on to the enemy you wish to fire at. This is achieved by holding your finger on your enemy, after a bar fills up you will be notified that you are locked on. Then, depending on how much you have increased your reload time, you will see a circle around your target, then that circle being encircled with a circle made out of blue dots. Once the blue dots have fully made a circle, you will see a red circle then closing in on your desired target, you may fire any time now. However, it will give you a much more accurate and higher damaged hit if you wait until the circle closes right in on your target and then fire. All the other controls throughout the game are pretty simple and easy to catch on. Overall, the controls in Boom! Tanks can be a little confusing at first, but after a few battles and missions you will catch on pretty quickly and start enjoying the game knowing how to operate it.
