Game Information

Release Date:March 2, 2010
Developers:SCE
Publishers:SCE
Platforms:Playstation 2,3, and Portable
Genre:Sports

Synopsis

MLB 2010 features a brand new Home Run Derby, MLB All-Star Futures Game, Movie Maker, Catcher Mode, Personalized cheers and yells and American League MVP Joe Mauer as the new cover athlete.

Gameplay

The gameplay hasn't changed much but it really didn't need to since it was great to begin with. The attention to detail really immerses you in the game and the audio upgrades in ambience and crowd noise add to the excitement. The addition of little things like the pitch hitting the umpire or a line drive bouncing off a pitcher or fielder make the experience more realistic. The announcers are improved as far as having more to say but much of it is the same. They still make you feel like your watching it on TV so they get the point across even though the canned responses get monotonous.

Graphics

The graphics have been given an overhaul and look more realistic this time around. With tons of new animations and lighting/shadow effects the players, crowds, and stadiums come to life. I'd like to see more variety in the characters in the crowd though. If they have to use duplicate character animations to fill it out they could at least have each occurence perform their animation at a different time so it doesn't look like the same looking people move the same way at the same time. Regardless, the graphics are much cleaner and smoother than before and look beautiful. I read another review where the guy said the graphics hadn't improved at all... that person either needs an HDTV, needs to learn how to hook it up properly, or needs new glasses. MLB 10 looks great and is a graphical improvement over MLB 09. It's all about the details and yes, most of the animations are the same but they're polished up and look better. New stadiums and crowd animations including team mascots this year. Custom audio tracks and personalized chants can be quite fun

Controls

Then there's the matter of the controls. Now the way I had my controls set up for base running was that backward on the left stick meant to go back to the base I was initially at, but at times, notably when i'm on 2nd base, this will reverse. I have no idea how or why this occurs but it can get annoying at times. Also, there's times where my character in RTTS is taking a bit of a lead, I hold back on the left stick to lean back towards the base and my character all of a sudden takes off toward the next base, which can get really annoying when your manager bites your ear off for it, but I didn't want to do that so what more is expected of me? Anyway, that's really all I have to say about the controls.

The sound in this game is great, the audio sounds exactly how you would expect a baseball game to sound, with not only the sound of a bat hitting the ball but also the crowd and the umpire's, it sounds like you're actually at a baseball game. Then there's the announce team, which for the most part is also great, but there is a few issues I have with it. Firstly, at times their speech can jump, an example of this is when one of the announcers says, "This batter is 0 for, 0 for 4 today" which is very minor, but can take away from the immersion.
