Plot
The Dark Age has a very interesting and unique plot which is set in a dark future where most of the world has been corrupted by a dark magic from hell called the Mace of Tains. The Mace of Tains somehow came from hell and ended up in the hands of a man named Asmodeus who used the Mace to rein terror upon the world as we know it. Empires began to rise throughout the world and Asmodeus gave short burts of the Mace to the most powerful empires for many years until he eventually stopped supplying them, the empires became restless and knew that they needed to power to take over the world. Each empire sent out one assassin to defeat Asmodeus and take the Mace for themselves, but to do that they must defeat every other assassin as well as Asmodeus before taking the Mace to do what they like with it.

Gameplay
This game is all about one on one fighting and using special moves that each player has to defeat their opponent. The game has a story mode where the player must fight and defeat all other assassins by draining their life bar before defeating Asmodeus to win the Mace of Tains. At the end of each battle the player executes his opponent and gains points at the end for special moves completed and the players amount of life remaining at the end of the battle. Every time the player fights a new opponent they fight on the opponents home turf, and every character in the game has their own, so the game has a large variety of changing maps which prevents to game from getting too repetitive. The game has twelve characters available from the beginning and with time, and maybe a few cheats, nearly twenty play-able characters. One disadvantage of the game is that there are very few levels which when the player picks up a good technique, he/she can complete the game in a very short period of time, although the game has great replay value if the player wants to challenge their self to completing the game with each separate character and their own unique play styles. The game also offers an offline multi-player mode where up to two players can use separate controllers to fight against one another to see who is the better fighter.

Graphics
This game was released a long time ago and had pretty basic, standard graphics all those years ago, so they are definitely not too impressive nowadays. The game varies from a variety of very dark to very colourful fighting arenas which is a nice aspect, whether purposefully added or not by the developers. The game music is very nice and serious as if taken from a movie, however the sound-effects and characters phrases can get quite repetitive and annoying after a while. Overall, the graphics are not top quality but the game is still playable nearly fifteen years on.

Controls
This game has a very large variety of possible combinations for each different character. There is no way a player could pick up a control, mash the buttons for an hour and complete the game. To learn the controls just for one character takes a lot of work and determination, to learn perfect timing for different attacks and simply where your fingers need to be at the right time. Since each character has different combinations, the game takes a very long time to fully complete, or even complete once for that matter. The controls are definitely not designed for players lacking skill or new gamers, they are very difficult to pick up and quite a challenge for serious gamers but there are very few issues with the controls.
