Plot
Princess Peach invites Mario to visit her at her castle as she has baked a cake for him. Mario travels to the castle along with Luigi and Wario, they enter the castle and realize that Princess Peach has been kidnapped and jump into a painting to save her. Toad wakes up Yoshi who was sleeping on the roof of Princess Peaches castle and tells him that Mario, Luigi and Wario have all been captured Bowser and he needs to go and rescue them so that they can rescue Princess Peach. However, he also tells Yoshi that Bowser has stolen all of the castles Power Stars and he must steal them back to save his friends. Yoshi after a slight hassle, manages to enter the castle and earn enough Power Stars to rescue Mario. The pair continue to complete different missions in different paintings around the castle, whilst defeating Bowser in multiple battles before rescuing Luigi and Wario. The four then work together to return as many power stars as possible to finally defeat Bowser for the final time and rescue Princess Peach.

Gameplay
The gameplay in this game is very similar to the original game, however there are three new playable characters all with unique abilities which allows the game to have different missions from the original game, make the game much funner, and longer. The game is fairly easy at the beginning but the difficulty increases further on through the game until it becomes quite difficult. The basic objective is to jump into pictures and walls which have secret worlds behind them where the player must complete set objectives to earn a power star. A new feature added in the remake is the Rec Room. Throughout adventure mode Rec Room games can be unlocked for each player, which are mini-games which can be played from the main menu. Most of the games consist of the player using the touch screen to try and achieve a high score in each different game. The game also offers a multi-player feature which is new to the re-make where players can play against each other in different stages by connecting their DS systems.

Graphics
The graphics of this game were improved a lot from the original game. The graphics are much smoother and cleaner compared to the original which was quite rough. The colours are still extremely bright which is to be expected when playing Mario games. Also, this is the first Mario game to be released in 3D on a hand-held console which definitely gives the game an advantage over every other hand-held Mario game released before it. The sounds are typical sounds for Mario games, where the players speak when actions are completed and the soothing music plays in the background. Overall, the graphics were very nice in this game and much better than the original.

Controls
Although this game is impressive in most other sections, the controls were a major let-down which is quite a shame. The simple controls such as attacking and jumping where quite easy however, the game proved to be quite difficult to play without a joystick. Another issue with the controls is that the camera angles do not change perfectly and the player will find himself repeatedly changing the camera angles manually using the touch screen at the bottom. The game allows the player to control the character using the buttons and using the touch screen, you may think that would solve the issues stated above, unfortunately, it does not. The touch screen is neigh impossible to use and if attempted to complete the game using the touch screen, it would be a disaster. The controls of the touch screen really are that bad that they would have been better just not adding it.
