Synopsis

Saw, also known as Saw: The Video Game, is a third person survival horror video game with action elements that was developed by Zombie Studios and published by Konami. The game launched on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles, with a downloadable version released soon after for the Microsoft Windows platform. The game was first released on October 6, 2009, in North America and was released later that year in other regions. The Microsoft Windows version was released on October 22, 2009. The game is an adaptation of the Saw film series that was released around the same time as Saw VI, although they have entirely separate storylines.

Setting

Well the game is set in a town in America, but in a Mental Asylum taking a plot twist from the original series, as you play a character who was presumed dead in the original Saw movie. While at this Asylum there are many people out to kill you, so this game is a test of whits and skill. The game was set in a 3D perspective which was great, also needed jumpy scenes ect.. Most of the game is set in the dark, which was good as it sets the dark and depressing mood. Overall the setting was pretty good.

Setting Rating:7.8/10

Gameplay

Well the gameplay was pretty neat and keeps you on the ball throughout the whole game, You play as Detective David Tapp, from the first Saw film. presumed dead in the film he has been healed by the Jigsaw Killer and brought the the Asylum as a 'Second Chance' to see if he has what it takes to live. First off the traps. The traps were mostly all from the saw film's and even though its a game, kept the same level of intensity while playing. The traps consist of using the A,B,X,Y buttons and sometimes others, this comes in when your trying to get something off you or when you fall into a trap and you need to quickly dodge a massive metal container. When exploring your surrounding you will come across a number of collectables that you need if you want to survive. These include weapons, which are needed to fight off other people trapped in the Asylum who's objective is to kill you. health, when in battle with another person in the Asylum your health can go down rather quickly, clues, help you with your objective, sometimes written on the wall, but can only be seen in the dark. case files and cassette tapes, these are not really needed but hold alot of extra information towards the asylum's past and give background information about victims. The game's combat was pretty good it has a few features like the ability to block, counter-attack, and perform attacks. Tapp is able to curb-stomp. There are over eighteen different weapons available to players, including lead pipes, mop handles, firearms, and explosives. This was all good, but the games combat system had a big problem. As you are playing a pretty old guy, he is very slow with moving and attacking. Whereas all of your ememies are fast and can kill you much quicker than you can kill them. Thats why you should always go into a fight with a weapon, overwise you will most likely die. If you are new to this game dont fall for such little mistakes as, leaving a challenge because theres a door that lets you skip it, because half the time, the door has a trip system that will shoot your head off with a shotgun. Minigames are a fun and frequent part of the game. They consist of searching, like searching a toilet for a key, full of syringes and razor blades. Although you are accompanied by an X-RAY that helps see where the key is. In a few parts of the game you are accompanied by some Teammates, but they usually dont last for long, most die pretty quickly. Overall the gameplay was really fun, i liked the way the plot could be a new film if they wanted it to be and the depth that the game went into was superb.

Gameplay Rating:8.4/10

Graphics

Well the graphics were some of the best i have seen, The 3D perspective makes it look better as you can see how your character looks and he basically might aswell be real, it just looked that good. Also as you are walking from place to place you will see buildings light up and you can see other little games going on, which i thought was rather amazing it adds more drama to the game. I did not find any glitches and the mini cutscenes were fantasic aswell. Overall i would say the graphics were some of the best i have played.

Controls

The controls were pretty simple, easy to get used to. The main part of the controls was the mini games, where you would move certain switches to turn the power on, or search around for a key in a toilet full of razor blades. Also in main gamplay having to mash a certain button to make sure something dosn't crush your head. Overall the controls were a great mix with the games atmosphere.

Controls Rating:7.6/10

Game Reception

Saw received mixed reviews from game critics. The Xbox 360 version of the game currently holds an average score of 59 percent on the game aggregator Metacritic, based on 35 reviews; the PlayStation 3 version has 59 percent from 36 reviews. On another aggregator site, Game Rankings, the Xbox 360 version has a 60.89 percent score based on 27 reviews, while the PlayStation 3 has 58.57 percent from 23 reviews. The PC version holds a lower score of 44.33 percent, based solely on three reviews. On a third aggregate site, GameStats, the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions hold a 6.4 and a 6.6 out of a possible 10, respectively.

Overall

Overall i would say its a pretty good game, i dont really understand why most people didn't like it, i think it was worth the money i payed and i hope they bring out a 3rd as there has been a 2nd. I honestly liked everything this game had to offer, it was a good scare, laugh and allround good game.

Overall Rating:8.1/10
