Synopsis:

History tells us that in the 40-plus years of the Cold War, forces from the United States and Soviet Union never actually faced each other in a major battle. The story is very different in the Toy Soldiers universe, though, where the opposing superpowers go head-to-head on battlefield dioramas across the world. Like its predecessor, Toy Soldiers: Cold War is a tower defense game in which quick reflexes are often as important as strategic thinking. You defend your toy box base not only by setting up gun emplacements, but also by manning said emplacements and, where they're available, taking direct control of vehicles and commando units that are powerful enough to turn the tide of a battle.

Story:

In the 1980's during the cold-war the United States and the USSR were hard at battle... defending their toy boxes. In the story you are controlling toy soldiers fighting off enemy toy soldiers in various toy boxes themed as different places around the world. Every battle usually starts out with a small wave then increases in difficulty until you face the boss of the level. The story gets really repetitive because your just defending your toy box in different places from the same enemy. Other then that seeing all the environments reminded me of child hood toys which I though was the best aspect of the game.

Story Rating: 8/10

Gameplay:

This game is a lot like tower defense games because you are setting up weapons all around your toy box to defend it. Reacting fast to enemies is the key to winning in some parts. Setting up a strategy early in the game so when the boss comes you do not have to change much in the level. Once you gather up a combo you can activate a power up. My favorite of all these power ups would be the commando, which lets you drop onto the level and run around in 3rd person and shoot everything with a launcher. All this and the commando resembles Rambo which I found quite fitting. The gameplay is hard to get used to early on but you should understand everything fairly well after playing it for a bit or taking the tutorial.

Gameplay Rating: 8/10

Graphics:

The graphics improved a lot from the original toy soldiers game. All the players, enemies and scenery look like real toys. The graphics are very good with that and having the outside of the toy box look like a kids room. Once of the best things about the game I think are the graphics. Most of the time they are very clean and smooth, only sometimes have i found bugs when flying the airplane around.

Controls:

The controls were hard for me to get used to, probably took me about 15 minutes before I was getting into the groove of playing the game. I would suggest playing the tutorial before the game because it helps you out a lot. After you learn the controls and you have them down you need to learn how to react with them fast during the harder missions. Like when you see a tank coming down a unguarded path you need to be able to place weapons all around the path and get on one as fast as you can. This requires a pretty good reaction time and handle of the controls.

Controls Rating: 8/10
