Synopsis

Sonic the Hedgehog ( Sonikku za Hejjihoggu) is a seminal 16-bit 1991 platform video game developed in Japan by Sega and published for the Sega Genesis. It is the first installment in Sega's flagship Sonic the Hedgehog video game series and the first title developed by Sonic Team. The game was released in 1991 in North America, Europe, and Japan. It was an enormous critical and commercial success for Sega, creating a popular, multiple decade franchise, and propelling the Sega Genesis to widespread popularity.

Setting

The setting was unique and brilliant, This game was a 2D side-scroller and the setting fit the needs of the main characters 'Sonic's' Super-power. The game has Six Zones With 3 acts in each, and at the end of each act, sonic will fight the main Villian(Bad Guy) Doctor Eggman(Doctor Ivo Robotnik) in one of his Six vehicles. This was common in most games around that time period that there would be a certain amount of levels and acts between the levels and at the end there would be a fight, so anyone could play the game and instantly be famillier with it. The levels are full of things that you can use to your advantage like 'Springs' to jump to another platform. And things that stop you from completeing the level like 'Spikes'. Overall i belive the setting was good, how it was linked to Sonic, and the use of things to you dis/avantage was a good feature.

Setting Rating:8.9/10

Gameplay

The gameplay for sonic the hedgehog was practicaly heaven, It was all linked the sonics ability to run at very fast speeds for an unlimited amount of time. This is why many parts of the scenery was put in to the game, to make the game more enjoyable and be adaptive to his super-power. Some of this scenery include of: Loop-de-loops, Probably the funnest part of the game for me. Springs, to jump to a higher platform and slopes, make you pick up high speeds. And high falls which were pretty cool. But also contained: sharp spikes sometimes in row so harder to aviod bottomless pits which sometimes were longer than others also harder to aviod and Badniks, enimies that you had to aviod or attack, sonic had a pretty good attack were he curls into a ball a spins really fast killing everything in his way, except for spikes. Apart from stopping the evil scientist Dr.Eggman The main objective was to collect gold rings scattered across each map, Sonic needed to collect 100 of these rings to gain another life, however if you hit an enemy or any kind of harmful scenery, all the rings you have collected get taken away from you. If you reach the end of act 1 or 2 with 50 rings a larger ring appears which you jump into to enter a secret level where you have to avoid all blocks and collect the 'Chaos Emerald'. Overall the gameplay was fun and i recomend anyone to buy this classic. It is on the XboxLive Marketplace if you feel the need to buy it.

Gameplay Rating:9.8/10

Graphics

Well the game came out in 1991, so the graphics were pretty bad but, i guess the graphics were okay to some standard. After playing it again when i found the demo on the XboxLive Marketplace, the graphics were pretty fuzzy with outlines in poor graphic condition also everything was 2D so i didn't really enjoy the graphics to well. As you can see below the graphics were in a poor condition. Overall the graphics were poor but it didn't stop the game from being one of the best games of all time.

Controls

The controls were the same as any other platformer (A,X) jump ect..ect. Due to it being a side-scroller you were only moving in 1 direction, so the game was easy to follow and there were no chances of getting lost in a Act. I enjoyed the way sonics superpower came into the controls with the spin attack. Overall the controls were easy(More so if you have played platformers before) and fun to use.

Controls Rating:10/10

Game Reception

The game was both a critical and commercial success. Gamespot has described the game as "one of the best platformers of all time" and credited as a game that "revolutionized the platform genre and gave people a legitimate alternative to Nintendo's fat plumber" It received high praise from IGN as well, stating that it had stood the test of time, stating "And even after 16 years, the game still looks great.EGM gave the game a 9 out of 10,while Computer and Video Games gave it 94%.The game has sold over 15 million copies, making it the best selling Sega Genesis game of all time as well as the best selling game of the Sonic franchise.

Overall

Overall sonic was a brilliant game then and a brilliant game now. The way it gets you sucked into playing it for hours the game was so simple, yet it led to one of the biggest selling gaming franchises in the world, making sega very respected and very wealthy. I recomend anyone buying any game from the sonic series as i have had nothing to complain about.

Overall Rating:9.8/10
