Synopsis

In Rayman's world, a mystical object known as the Great Protoon maintains the planet's harmony and balance. One fateful day, the evil Mr. Dark steals the Protoon, causing the world to fall out of balance and scattering all the Electoons that gravitated around it across the world, where they are captured by the strange creatures that appear due to the phenomenon. With Betilla the Fairy defeated in her attempt to stop Mr. Dark, it is up to Rayman to free the Electoons and defeat Mr. Dark and his minions.

Setting

The game is set in a 2D side scrolling world, which was a great idea for the platformer,i found this to make it very fun to play and was a good layout, the levels usually consisted of moving up, jumping on loads of platforms or climbing up scenery usually due to something rising to kill you EG.water. The game had 5 areas, all with a few levels between. There were a number of things you would do to complete a level, either Walking, Crawling, Running, Climbing, Glideing All of these features you would get as you progressed through the game. Also on some missions there would be A Dark Version of you and he copies what you do but your like 4/5 seconds infront of him and you have to make your way through a puzzle and if you stop for too long he touches you and you have to start the mission again, i found this kinda random but fun all the same.

Gameplay

Rayman, probably THE best PS1 platformer game you will ever come across. In the game you control Rayman, I dont really know what rayman is suppost to be but he has no arms, legs or neck just hands and feet, which he is undercontrol of, they just hover like there are connected to his missing parts. The game is kinda like a puzzle game only with fighting aswell, due to raymans hands hovering by his body he can do long reached punches also cling on to lanches or vines, this was key to how the story played out. You go to 5 different worlds in this game:Dream Forest, Band Lands, Blue Mountains, Picture City and The Caves of Skops, The main objective was to free all the caged Electoons, there were 6 on each level that you had to find, once you have found all of them you have the final boss battle with Mr. Dark. But on each level you have a boss fight with one of his minions. My favourite boss battle was with the giant moskito, as one you defeated him, he would then be your 'conpanion' and fly you around to the different locations, which i thought was a nice touch. The adrenaline rush from playing this game was immense! every mission would bring something new, you were there amazed at the game and how it couldn't get any better and then BAM! you climbing for your life so you dont drown from the fast rising water coming for you. The one thing i wish i had done was complete the game, as many people said it was extreamly difficult and not many people did comeplete it me included. But The game worked wonders, arguably making it the best Rayman game from the series.
Gameplay Rating:9.3/10

Graphics

The game came out in 1995 so it was obviously lacking Amazing 1080p Graphics, But by making it a 2D Side-Scrolling game, it made the graphics look better than they were. The game came out before i was born and when i played it the graphics seemed fine, but after digging around for my ps1 and this game yesterday, the graphics were not so great as i remember. Over all id say the graphics are half decent. As you can see the outlines and scenery are fuzzy so the graphics were a let down but at the time were great.

Controls

The controls were amazingly simple you could only move left and right up and down you couldn't do spins as such as it was only a 2D game you could only move in one direction which was pretty fun, and reduced the chances of getting lost, which would always happen to me on other games. It was just a basic jump, climb, run and fly that was all the game was based on. Thus making it simple and fun.
Controls Rating:8.6/10

Game Reception

The game got alot of praise, this is what i found on the Games Reception. Rayman received generally positive reviews from critics. The GameRankings review aggregator calculated scores of 77.00% and 75.00% for the MS-DOS and Sony PlayStation versions respectively, while the Sega Saturn and Atari Jaguar versions both received scores of 85.00%. The game's graphics and soundtrack received particular praise, along with its imaginative art style and complex level design. Criticism focused on its gameplay, which was regarded as solid but not particularly inventive or original. The game also drew criticism for its unforgiving difficulty; the player was required not only to perform very difficult platforming and combat manoeuvres, but also to locate and smash all 102 Electoon cages scattered throughout the game in order to unlock the final level, Mr Dark's Dare. Many players did not complete the game due to its difficulty.

Overall

Overall this game was a Breakthrough and went on to make a great and respected series and a few great spin-offs, like the raving rabbids series. Rayman was altogether one of my favourite games, it had everything you could hope for. I recomend anyone to buy this or any other of the rayman games as there probably like less than 1 or $1.50 Also if you have a PS3 a better idea would be to buy Rayman Origins.
Overall Rating:9.6/10
