Synopsis

Bayonetta is an unabashedly gory, violent, and racy action-adventure that stars a shape-shifting witch in the title role. The playfully wicked Bayonetta faces overwhelming mobs of angelic and demonic enemies, and meets them all in flowing, fast-paced combat involving both firearms and magically empowered melee weapons. As in combat action games such as Devil May Cry or God of War, high-energy battles play out with timing and combos, rewarding practiced players with elegant ballets of bullets and beat-downs, leaving a bloody trail of fallen foes as Bayonetta proceeds through each scene. Moving from air to the ground and back, players guide the witch hero through jumps, floats, and juggles against nearby foes. When in her normal, human shape, her lanky yet fully feminine form is clad in what appears to be a skintight black jumpsuit, wearing her hair pulled back and a smart pair of Lisa Loeb-style eyeglasses. Coursing with supernatural ability (especially through that long, black hair...) she can take other forms when needed, such as an agile, black cat creature or an imposing, powerful hulk.

Gameplay

The gameplay in Bayonetta was really exciting. There were a lot of moves that you could pull of in the game as well having secret weapons hidden at your disposal. In the game you play as Bayonetta and you have to use your skills and wit to defeat demonic creatures with your arsenal of weapons. The enemies in the game aren't that hard to defeat, just as long as you are using the right weapons and you're using the full use of your combos. You have various weapons that you can use to your advantage. A few of these are your melee weapons, these are pretty deadly are close range and definitely hurt your enemies. You also 4 pistols. Two in your hands and two in your high heels. I found this feature quite cool because Bayonetta goes into a handstand when she shoots with the pistols in her heels as they are automatic. These are excellent from long range and are accurate. Back to the enemies, some of them can prove quite a threat as they have a lot of health. Sometimes if you are being surrounded by some enemies and you know they are going to be difficult to defeat then I would suggest the tactic that I have been using since the game came out. Jump away from them, get to a safe spot and take out your pistols and shoot them from a far. As the start closing in on you, take out your melee weapon and start getting combos on them to finish them quickly and in style. The only nuisance I encountered during the gameplay was that in next to near every level I was having constant battles with enemies. It starts to get boring and repetitive especially if you still may have the same melee weapons and same combos. There isn't much more in the game to explore however the fights are pretty amazing. The missions in the campaign are really thorough and you're going to have to take down a lot of demonic creatures to complete your objectives. This game can be completed in a couple of days, but is one of them games that you only play once in the space of a fortnight or even never again if you didn't enjoy your first play-through.

Graphics

Now graphics in Bayonetta are pretty amazing. Nearly everything in the game is textured and detailed really well. First of the environment that you play and battle your way through look great and well developed. They are enjoyable to play in and definitely give you that atmosphere that drifts around the environment. Effects such as Bayonetta shooting from her pistols and explosions look stunning and somewhat realistic. Other things like enemy armor and facial features do seem quite undeveloped and I feel that some parts of it required some more work. The combos that you pull off in the game once you get the hang of it look sweet and when you perfect a combo that looks really nice then you do get the excitement and adrenaline factor. Melee weapons in the game are well detailed and are coloured and texturised the way that they should be. This game is pretty gory and there is a lot of bloodshed in this game which looks pretty realistic. So those that are squeamish they might want to turn the gory settings off. If not, hack them demonic enemies to death as you plead. Developers seem to have been dedicated to making the graphics portion of this game outstanding and I can honestly say that they did a good job. Now others may disagree with me, but playing this game in High Definition drew me to the edge of my seat and sucked me into a vortex of colourful destruction.

Overall, this game is really enjoyable to play and has a nice gruesome story-line for those of us that like these sort of games. Game controls are pretty basic and respond well when you are pulling off combos. You can pick this game up from the Games on Demand for 15 pounds and the equivalent on the PS3 if it can be found.

Game Rating : 8/10 (Gory gameplay, breathtaking graphics, decent story-line but has no real addiction factor. May complete the campaign once but you may not want to play it again)
