Synopsis

Turok is an epic, story-driven first-person shooter set on a dark, mysterious planet in the future. Players take on the role of Joseph Turok, a former black ops commando, now part of an elite special forces squad, known as Whiskey Company, which is on a mission to take down a war criminal Turoks former mentor, Roland Kane. While Whiskey Company is traveling to the genetically altered planet inhabited by Kane and his soldiers, Whiskey Companys ship is shot down. Turok must use his elite military training to elude Kanes well-trained army, known as Mendel-Gruman, and the ravenous, unpredictable dinosaurs, huge insects and other massive creatures that populate the dangerous environment. Turoks mission? Survive at all costs.

Gameplay

The gameplay in this game is quite decent. Missions aren't that hard and you can literally kill anything that moves. When you first venture out, small dinosaurs and other minute creatures will attack you. These shouldn't pose too much of a threat as long as you're witty and quick with your actions. As you venture further out you will start to encounter big dinosaurs and the powerful ones such as the Stegosaurus and the Raptors. Now you can choose to sneak past them, but if you're reckless like I am you'll go right in for the kill. Some creatures have equipment that will aid you, such as arrows and maybe even drop things that regenerate your health. There are loads of hidden equipment around the vast areas that you venture out in, guns, arrows, health. Loads of things. Missions in the game aren't that difficult are require little effort to complete. Some require you to fight enemies and other dinosaurs and some require you to find something for someone that can aid you in the future. One of the exciting and weird things that I noticed later on in the game is that I was flying an extinct dinosaur trying to take out a war criminal, but my flying dinosaur had rockets and a machine gun. I thought this was quite bizarre, extraordinary and intuitive. Flying the dinosaur was great fun as well as it was easy to control and it was definitely enjoyable. Other than that, running around killing helpless animals in a gory fashion is exciting to but not as much as soaring the sky with a deadly dinosaur. Your health is displayed in the bottom left hand corner so you can see what you're at and when it gets low it will start to flash. When it starts flashing, you might want to find some health or get out of the battle that you're fighting if you can. You can't aim down the sights if you have a pistol or a shotgun, you can hip-fire which may not do the damage that is sufficient to kill your enemies and you can aim down your sights slightly. Now aiming down the sights does make you more accurate but it's not fully aiming down the sights. You can use various different guns in the game, pistols, shotguns and even a minigun. Using the minigun was a whole lot of fun. I encountered a group of giant scorpions. Took out the minigun and sent them flying and this was definitely fun and gory. Also if you can find two of the same pistol or sub machine gun you can run around with them akimbo. Using two weapons in different hands in great fun and makes you feel invincible in the game. Personally, those are the kind of things that I found interesting in the game. Campaign is decent and you can play it for a couple of hours a day if you have the time. Also if you get bored of the campaign the game has multiplayer compatibility. Now the multiplayer is fun for a couple of hours but it gets boring and repetitive and has no real addiction factor to it. So you may find yourself playing the multiplayer once and never again. That was for me personally but others may have a different opinion on the multiplayer portion of the game.

Graphics

Now graphics in this game aren't exactly amazing. Dinosaurs don't look realistic enough, I know they're extinct and all that but it would have been nice to see a little more effort go into their bodies and their textures to make them look realistic enough. The weapons however are detailed really well and so are Joseph Turok's clothing. It seems a lot of work has gone into detailing his garments and they look really great. Effects when you shoot your guns, reloading and firing explosive arrows look great and almost look realistic as well. I remember an objective where I had to kill at T-Rex and I was in it's lair. Everything looked really well detailed not to mention the T-Rex looked amazing as well. As this was a big objective in the game for me, I decided to look around the lair and the textures around the lair, the ground, the bones all looked great. So that was a good sight to see in the graphics proportion of this game.

Overall this game is quite fun and it is somewhat enjoyable if you like to run around helplessly and recklessly killing innocents then by all means buy this game. Campaign can be completed in a short time but I doubt you'd want to play the campaign second time around. You can pick up this game for quite cheap in nearby game stores if you looking for a decent game to play. This is one of those decent games.

Game Rating: 7/10 (Gameplay is enjoyable at most parts, graphics are amazing in certain areas and multiplayer compatibility is decent but has no real addiction factor)

Turok is a video game based off the fictional comic book? You didn't know that?

Yeah that's the one. It's not the best game, but it's decent.

I've wanted to pick this up, but all my friends say it blows :/.

It's pretty cheap so I think I might get it. Good review.
