Synopsis
Killzone 3 is the fourth release overall in the PlayStation 3 exclusive first-person shooter franchise, and contains the first integration of the PlayStation Move system into its gameplay. In it players continue the fight by a futuristic special ops team against the seemingly unstoppable Helghast Empire. Along the way players will learn more than ever before about the rabid Helghan culture, as well as become aware of an internal struggle in their ranks that may prove to be an important weakness. The game features full Playstation Move system integration throughout the game -- including the Move and Navigational controllers. Additional features include: the ability to carry two primary weapons, new melee and jet pack functionality and online multiplayer support.

PlayStation Move integration into Killzone 3 is one of these new tools. Although the DualShock 3 controller is of course supported, the two controllers of the PlayStation Move system (Move and Navigational) are also usable at every stage of the game. Use the Motion Controller as a site for your weapon and pointer that changes your view of the horizon onscreen, while the Navigational controller provides movement as well as auto-aiming functionality. The sensitivity of the Move controller can be altered via the game's setting menu. With a subtle gesture the Move Motion controller can also reload a weapon, pick up items and ammo on the battlefield, as well as unleash a brutal melee attack within close range of an enemy. Additional features of the game as a whole include: the ability to carry two primary weapons in addition to your piston and knife, jet pack functionality seen in earlier games, fully destructible environments and online multiplayer support.

Story
When we first boot into Killzone 3 we find ourselves in control of what appears to be a Helghast soldier proceeding along the deck of a highly advanced spaceship looking for the weapon testing/firing compound. Under the pretence of trying out new weapons we're herded into a firing range (where we learn how to shoot) and there find out that we're to be the firing squad for a famous human captive recently taken in battle, and our next stop will be the room of execution where we will complete our objective. On the way to this room however the conversation between the two soldiers quickly makes it apparent that they are not what they seem - they are in fact human agents here to liberate said captive. In that room a short fire fight takes place and the three very human (and very recognisable, if you've played the previous game) soldiers make their escape.
Flash Backwards.
Picking the story up from where it left off in Killzone 2 we flashback to the last moments of the late emperor Visari (grand high invasion baddie leader from Hel...gan) whose death was the ultimate goal of the second instalment. After a fairly easy skirmish to escape the area it becomes clear that the war against Helgan hasn't died with its Emperor. A struggle for power ensues amongst the who's who of Helghast Military/Politcal heads and two new potential candidates for leadership pull ahead (the major general of the governmental Helgan army, and a politician who owns their leading war technology development company plus the largest private army in their society). These two go toe to toe in attacks against the humans to see who will have the most success, and ultimately win out as alpha male of the Helgan race.
Your part in all this as a human is to survive, win, push back, and defeat!

Gameplay
The Killzone games have come on leaps and bounds since the initial game was release back in 2004 (for PS2), and the second game in early 2009 (for PS3). I have to admit that I wasn't a big fan of Killzone 2 - while it was entertaining I felt that it was a below average FPS game and didn't really deliver on the graphical potential or disk storage capacity that PS3 only games can offer. So it was with some animosity that I picked up the third title of the brand, however that animosity lasted for all of about 10 minutes.
Although level progression is linear the maps are large enough to make it feel like you're not just relentlessly battling forward, but that you're in a field of battle where options such as flanking, drawing, rushing or holding are all viable. Whether you choose to collect the biggest gun pillaged from your foes and rampage, or look for tactical advantage and progress with some finesse, there's more to Killzone 3 than being quicker off the mark at shooting your enemy than they are to shoot you (something I felt Killzone 2 was guilty of). Background areas to the playable maps were also vastly improved - and at times plain vast! Get on to a rooftop and check out the city/battleground stretching out for what seems like miles in all directions, or look up and see spaceships in cat fights throughout the skies - there's always plenty going on to take in.

Graphics
In parts, stunning. Killzone 3 certainly utilised the PS3's graphical and disk storage capacities (designers, learning from mistakes...flying monkeys) where its PS3 predecessor failed. While immediate tools, gun, people and scenery all appear as if you're looking out of your window instead of into your TV, I'd also take some time to check out the background city/battlefield from a rooftop - the level of detail that's gone into the maps is at times outstanding.

Controls
With multiple control configurations (including a COD-like setup for the purists) you will have no complaints in getting to grips with the controls. I personally changed the default system to one that matched my playing style as the duck into/emerge from cover and shoot system seemed a little unnatural to me - but after a quick change up to control type 2 I was straight into the action fighting back without a thought as to the buttons. The addition of sixaxis game control was also a welcome addition and not overdone as players can achieve smaller feats such as opening vents and controlling valves with the tilt of a controller.
