Game Information
Release Date: 03/05/2011
Developed By: SEGA / Liquid Entertainment / Marvel Studios
Genre: Action Adventure
Platform: Cross Platform
Age Restrictions: 12+

Synopsis
Thor: The Video Game will delve deep into the heroic tales of the Thor universe. Eisner Award-winning writer and lead Thor comic book author Matt Fraction brings authenticity to the narrative as a story consultant, and elevates the story beyond the comic and movie universe throughout the video game. Players will take on an array of ancient enemies and beasts from the many worlds of Norse mythology by using different battle strategies and elemental powers. The sacred Mjolnir, Thor's legendary hammer, will allow players to command the powers of the storm: wind, thunder and lightning. By earning Valor in combat throughout the game, players will also be able to select from a wider range of abilities, acquire new attacks, powers and upgrades. The Xbox 360 version will feature cinematic, third-person action gameplay with melee combos, ranged hammer throws, tide-turning elemental powers and an upgrade system to bolster Thor's powers as gamers progress.

Story
I'm almost stumped as where to start here guys... From the offset you're dumped into the middle of a pit facing what looks to be strange alien creatures from outer space (since when did E.T. meet the Vikings?) in a get-to-grips-with-the-controls type intro.
Once that's over the story begins... but if you can find a story you're doing better than I did. A city is under attack but what city that may be, who's attacking it or why, is left to your imagination (for those of us who aren't up to speed on Viking lore anyway). For all I could tell the plotline was hammered out on the back of a cigarette packet and consists of run, jump, hit and repeat.

Gameplay
In the time that I played this game to review it all I could think of was that it appeared be little more than a 3D version of the arcade classic Golden Axe with the visuals of an N64 emulation, but lacking the enjoyment factor, plot or worthwhile characters.
The point system which racks up your Valor whenever you bash something just lacks a handle at the left of your TV, as it appears to be ripped clean off an old fruit machine. Character moves are linear and dull for the most part - even the grand special move "Thors Might" appeared to be our hero jumping into mid-air and having a bowel movement. When Thor dies the game conjures a "heroic recovery" which actually appears to be somebody from behind camera throwing him bodily back into the level (my guess was that he tries to escape from the shame...). The examples could go on, and on.

Graphics
The graphics in the game are some of the worst I've seen on a current next gen console game. So bad in fact that I wondered if there isn't some old game engine out there which the Hollywood fat cats rent out and shove their latest movie on; the only thought in their mind being to turn a few extra bucks - times are hard, right? From the intro screen that looked like a bad acid trip, to the blocky pixelated background and 90's arcade characters, the graphic designers/developers should be herded into a small room and shot for what they did to this game.

Controls
The control and battle system are simplistic to the point of moronic - jump, hit, repeat. Movement is extremely unrealistic and at times reminded me of the quality of game physics found on PS2 games (excellent at the time, not so great now). Buy this for your 3 year old nephew (one you don't particularly like) so that they can get into a console game and button bash like a pro.

I'm not going to lie. You didn't even need a review. All you had to say was that it was a game made for a movie that just came out. That instantly puts it at a 5 or lower.
