Tribal Trouble

Platform: Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, Linux
Genre: Real-time strategy
Release Date: March 31, 2005
Developer: Oddlabs
Publisher: GarageGames

Synopsis

Tribal Trouble is a real-time strategy video game for Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. The game pits natives of tropical islands against invading Vikings. The game was originally developed by independent studio Oddlabs, and has won several awards, including four top 5 positions in indie game review site GameTunnel's 2005 awards in the categories of best multiplayer game, best graphics, best strategy game and best game overall. This game is recommended for ages 12 and up by the Oddie Recording studios. The game also spawned a sequel, Tribal Trouble 2 in 2011, however it doesn't seem to have got further than Beta testing.

Gameplay

Tribal Trouble was a game I always played as a kid and wish I could get into it again now. Tribal Trouble is set in the past where you play as Vikings or Indians some may say. You will be required to use strategy and build a fortress. You will have to build multiple building such as armors for that will hold all your wood and ore and quarters where you will recruit new units of soldiers to protect and fight off your enemy. For resources in this game you will have to recruit miners that will mine rock, ore and trees once you've tasked them to allowing you to recruit new and improved soldiers and build more huts around your fort. You can even upgrade your soldiers making their weapons stronger or harder to kill. Of course your task in this game is to build your army as fast as possible and different your enemy and their fortress until they get yours. There is a campaign side of this game where you complete stages battling harder and harder bases or you can just play a skirmish against an AI just for the fun of it. This game is also generated so the lands and everything in skirmish will be automatic besides campaign. Of course there is also a variety of different difficulties in this game increasing the difficulty of your enemy. You will automatically download the free version on this game only allowing you to build certain buildings and warriors but if you buy the full version you can build watch towers and play as another race.

Graphics

The graphics aren't that surprising to me for the technology we have now but from when I was young I was shocked to see graphics in this game. Not much detail in the trees to the grass on the ground was put into this game. The ground in this game is also smoothed out with no real looking mountains and cliffs. You will also see the water as really no effects to it but just still blueness really bringing the game down. A good thing is how good the buildings look and how you can zoom down onto the battlefield with close of view of your soldiers. The soldiers don't have the greatest detail and texture to them but they still look Vikings and Indians. Can't really relate this game to what we have now since it was made in the 2005 but it still has good enough graphics that you can enjoy. The trees are also a main part of this game since you see them around everywhere but they just don't really improve the gameplay as much. The leaves (or are they even leaves) and branches on them have no texture. Besides that the game runs incredibly smooth with all the events going on.

Controls

For a game I haven't played in a while I have recently just installed it to make this review and the controls were the easiest. I remembered everything since there is only a few main keys you actually need but after taking the tutorial real quick I got to know everything like it just popped into my head again. You will mostly likely be using the mouse through this entire game clicking where your units of soldiers will go and placing huts and armories in certain areas. You can also use the keyboard to either look around the map by using the arrows or press a button to bring up the map showing you the whole island.

This looks like a fun game mate, haven't played it yet but I'm sure gonna give it a go in the future! I'm a real big fan of strategy games and this looks like my type on paper.
