Zero no Tsukaima would be an exact match to what you're looking for. The protagonist starts as nothing and works his way up through a constant up hill battle and while enjoying a harem like experience so there is plenty of romance. It's a long series too over 75 episodes (I think). So it allows you to invest in the charactors rather than most 12 episode series.

I've seen them all.. I didn't really like one piece though. And Kaze No Stigma was amazing.

First 3 similarities just look up echhi/harem anime (trust me they are all almost the same lol)
