So buzzfeed recently posted a video about how buying guns off facebook blah blah, buts thats not the point. In the comments people are saying its not an assault rifle, it stands for ArmaLite Rifle. yeah yeah i don't care what it STANDS for but what does the rifle classify as. Is it an assault rifle or not? I searched up on google 'is an ar15 a assault rifle' first thing it says is "AR-15-style rifles are NOT "assault weapons" or "assault rifles." An assault rifle is fully automatic -- a machine gun." but then i searched up assault rifle definition and it says "a rapid-fire, magazine-fed automatic rifle designed for infantry use." and then the rapid fire definition, "(of a gun) able to fire shots in rapid succession.". Rapid succession doesn't necessarily mean automatic, right?

So what is it folks, is the AR-15 an assault rifle?

"AR" does NOT stand for "assault rifle" or "automatic rifle." AR-15-style rifles are NOT "assault weapons" or "assault rifles." An assault rifle is fully automatic -- a machine gun. Automatic firearms have been severely restricted from civilian ownership since 1934.

It would seem not, since yunno, the whole not automatic thing.

No, personally I do not think so. An assault rifle in my head is a fully automatic gun, an AR15 is semi auto.

ALSO, AR stands for I BELIEVE an Armalite Rifle. But do not quote me on that.

What it comes down to is the look. Even if you had a bolt action AR-15 they would call it an assault rifle, however by definition just like you said, a magazine fed semi-auto rifle is an assault rifle.

Do want to know what I call bs? Let's take your standard police issue Glock 22. This is a magazine fed semi-auto pistol, but do we call it an "assault pistol"? No, we call it a pistol...

I don't think it is. Liberals will say the opposite though...

I would say it is an assault rifle because firstly, it's used primarily for assaulting, it's not a target practice weapon or anything like that. It's used mainly by the military. And it's definitely a rifle, since the AR-15 is based off the M16, which is an assault rifle.

That first page you found was BS by the way, an assault weapon is any weapon designed primarily for military use, I:E assaulting. It means it wasn't created for target practice or another purpose.

Honestly, it doesn't really matter if you put the word "assault" in front of it or not. You can call it a rifle or an assault rifle, either way it's still the same gun.

The AR-15 is primarily for shooting not assaulting. You only say that because of what the media blast everytime a mass shooting occurs. The media doesn't blast the amount of people that safely handle this rifle everyday at the shooting range and target practice. There are many competitions for target shooting with AR-15 type weapons. Many people have them because they are fun to shoot and are extremely accurate therefore making it the perfect shooting range weapon. The M4 and M16A4 are mainly used by the military not the AR-15, and yes there is a difference between those weapons.
