I just bought sapphire r9 390. I thought i had everything worked out then i realized my psu only has a 6 and a 6+2 pin. The sapphire requires 2 8 pin connectors. Since i just spent $300 dollars on a new gpu i cant really afford a new psu right now. I know its a bad idea but i was thinking about getting a 6 to 8 pin adapter temporarily until i get the money for a new psu. I dont feel like waiting 3-4 more weeks. Just letting my new card sit there would be torture. Ive been super anxious to use it but i dont wanna risk anything. Also if anyone has any psu recommendations($100-150 range) feel free to hit me up.

A 6-8 pin connector would work as you get one with a 970 so they are feasible.

Hmm, after reading a few topics on this problem, people are skeptical (as you said).

I just can't figure out why Nvidia would supply you with one unless that is for 2X 6pin - 1X 8pin.

EDIT: This is for a 980 and it uses a 6-8 adapter:

You're right it makes sense that it would be ok. I'll order one and just use it till i get a new PSU. Thanks for the help man!

OP has an AMD card, not NVidia.

OP- An adapter should be fine. What is your current PSU?

I'd replace it asap, as it's not a very good unit. You should be fine though, especially if you're not using it for an extended period of time. I'd personally just use a molex to 8-pin adapter, or a 6-pin to 8-pin.

As for PSU upgrade, and EVGA 850G2 would be nice, gives you XFire support to add a 2nd 390 at any point, as long as your motherboard supports XFire. Otherwise, and EVGA 550G2/GS, or 650G2/GS. Just make sure it's a G2/GS unit you get, and not a G1, the G1's are terrible.

Ok i I'll probably get the 850W but if i wanted to save a little money would getting a 750W be ok? Also i basically need to start upgrading my whole system. I have a AMD phenom II x4 955(about 3 years old) will this bottleneck with the 390 or should it be fine? If not whould you recommend getting an I5 or another cheaper AMD fx processor as my motherboard can support it. If i went with intel i'd have to get a whole new motherboard and i dont feel like doing that right now too.
