You can't compare the whole gay marriage thing to something as iconic as that though. It's just disrespectful. The original picture signified that America has won, that we have won the world war. Gay Marriage only helped 2% of America.

Now is that a win, yes, it's a step forward for the lgbt community, but did they have to go and compare it to the win that affected all of America? No.

thats very disrespectful mate, i understand that many people like that gay marriage is legalized now, but that will never compare to the soldiers of any country, even if some gays died fighting for that right, our soldiers protect us from any danger and without them the gays and other races would not be living to this day, well we would but we would be ruled by another country.

I wouldnt say its the most disgusting thing ive ever seen in my life. But it is very disrespectful to equate soldiers to gay rights. The troubles that the soldiers faced on Iwo Jima are much different and deadly than the troubles homosexuals faced getting rights..

If it is true, I think the most disgusting thing is the death threats the person who took the picture is getting. Can it be offensive? Sure. This is only one of the many times that this photo has been parodied though. Whether it be on beer cans, album covers, protests, political cartoons, advertisements, or just some form of art. Personally, I don't really care. It doesn't take away anything from the original, so it is all good.

The gay community has come an extremely long way over the last few years.

However, to compare it to something like this where the soldiers are seen raising the US flag during the Battle of Iwo Jima in World War II is a complete embarrassment and should never be compared to each other.

The gay community should not be remembered by that picture, instead they should have something else symbolising there struggle and triumph.

I understand your view of how the top picture cannot compare to the sacrifice the people made in the bottom picture but I would disagree on you saying how it is disgusting. I believe that the bottom picture represent a triumph in American history and the legalization of same-sex marriage fits under the category of a superb achievement in American history.

It depends who views it if they find it offensive. But in my opinion no one had to die for gay marriage, this is offensive to the ones that have died for our rights!

This is obviously a tribute picture.
They're not saying they've gone through the same fight at all.
The people on Iwo Jima fought for freedom, the picture above is a tribute to them and their sacrifice now that some of that freedom has actually been gained.

But let's take your idea that they are actually trying to say they've been through the same fight.
26,000 Americans died on Iwo Jima. Every year in the US alone there are 30,000 suicides.
While exact statistics are impossible to gain, it is known that gay people attempt suicide 4 times more than heterosexual people.
The number of people who have committed suicide because they were being bullied for being gay is obviously far more than those who died fighting on Iwo Jima, and those are only the ones who killed themselves, never mind the ones killed by other people.

This comparison is not disgusting, it is poignant and it is honouring those who fought for freedom on Iwo Jima.

As for people saying that no gay person has ever died for gay marriage. Seriously?
Gay rights, including marriage, have been fought for by gays since the 60's and before.
Gay people have been murdered, beaten, pushed to suicide and killed in protests so that gay marriage could be legalized.
That's like saying no black person ever died in the fight for civil rights.

Edit: If any of you - as of this point in time - nine twelve people who disagree want to respond and challenge these views I'll happily entertain your thoughts and opinions.
Simply downvoting this post isn't going to change my opinion, challenging me will.
12 people and not one of you has actually responded to me. This is embarrassing.
You're all so hugely offended by this, yet none of you can explain why.

I actually like how you saw it like this. I kind of step back from my comment and lean towards this one. On topic of those who died and while it wasn't a protest though, can't forget this event: [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]
