Has anyone ever tried to beat the entire thieves guild without killing anyone besides main quest line? or is that not even possible

Actually for Skyrim its impossible to do. Since for the storyline of the guild you have to kill someone in order to complete it, as one of the missions for a quest.

As for why someone would want to do it like that, perhaps they want to be a nice thief who isn't a murderer? A true thief wouldn't need to kill to steal what they come for, however due to the way the quests are set up it forces at least one kill on the player preventing this kind of thief from being do-able in the guild.

I think that would take the fun out of it when your a thief in Tamerial your meant to be a scumbag who only cares about getting what you want no matter who gets in your way.

Actually thieves in Elder Scrolls lore are meant to have a code, steal only and never shed blood unless you have to. Otherwise they'd be the Morag Tong or the Dark Brotherhood, though more the former as the Morag Tong is a combined assassin/thief guild, the Dark Brotherhood are just assassins and the thieves guild is just thieves. Its even said in-game that the thieves guild leave killing to the Dark Brotherhood.

Not necessarily, in the thieves guild in Oblivion the objective is to make yourself a legend that nobody will forget. While making a nice chunk of coin.
