I know many people that hate it because it is a cartoon. It could be a bit of that. People want others to "grow up," and they feel people that still watch cartoons are kids. Could be dealing with that or maybe it is just the content of the ones you watch. Some are totally clean like Pokemon, others are pretty (if not very) suggestive. Just depends on the person and their view of it.

I'd say Anime is a bit more grown up then what is on TV in America.

I mean, do I need to give you more examples of shows that you can't even take seriously? Why would I, a 17 year old guy, watch one of those two shows?

I'd rather be labeled as an "otaku" or "guy that likes anime" than watch these cartoons.

I'd rather be spending my time watching something that took a bit of effort to produce.

Now, I'll gladly watch shows with real people like Criminal Minds, Bones, Castle, ect.

But when you compare Anime to Cartoons, I hope you can see which is less cancerous.

EDIT:

On what some one said about some people taking the whole anime thing too far. In my case, I don't bring up Anime unless someone else brings it up. For example, Someone sees my iPhone case of Rias
iPhone case I had on my phone:

and they ask "You like Anime?"
and I will just simply reply with a simple "Yeah"
and if they keep talking about anime or say they like anime as well then I will engage in a conversation about anime with them.
I'm not hiding the fact that I like Anime and when someone asks I answer them honestly, like there is nothing to hide. It's not like anime is illegal or something.
Yeah, it may be out of the "social" norm but people should still accept what you like and be done with it.

That is fine, but I doubt it is an easy task explaining that to someone that just doesn't care about drawn/animated shows. Most just wouldn't care either way and find them all the same. I have overheard the arguments and people always say things like, "Those people are weird, they still watch cartoons." Some people just don't get it nor do they really care to get it.

I personally watch both types. Like, I will watch things like Adventure Time, The Regular Show, and the Amazing World of Gumball every once in a while. I have also watched things like Dragon Ball Z, Pokemon, Naruto, the first series of Yu-Gi-Oh!, and Full Metal Alchemist. (Not sure where you would put Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra.) Yea, I kind of only watched the more popular stuff that made it to the west. The others just don't really interest me. I mean, I don't judge those that watch them, but I have totally heard people that do. Some think that if you are a teen or older and watch drawn/animated shows, then you are immature or a kid. It is a flawed argument, but I'm not sure they really care.

I rarely know any girls that like anime. Some may secretly watch anime without telling anyone because they can't be themselves around their "friends". But you would be surprised how many girls actually like anime when you go to events like comic con, supernova, anime expo etc.

Also no, you wouldn't want to be labled as an otaku over "a guy that watches cartoons aimed at a childish demographic in his spare time" as otaku typically holds the connotation of the individual being a social recluse (which we all are but i digress)
