New York City Public Schools will get two new days off in 2015, as Mayor Bill de Blasio announced the city will incorporate the Muslim holidays of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha into its academic calendar. It will be the largest US school district to do so.

De Blasio tweeted the change in policy Wednesday, calling it "a change that respects the diversity of our city." The addition of the two holidays fulfills a pledge the mayor made during his campaign to better represent New York's increasing and diverse Muslim population, the New York Times reported.

The official announcement by de Blasio and Schools Chancellor Carmen Farina came four hours later at PS/IS 30 in Brooklyn, where officials said 36 percent of students were absent the last time Eid al-Adha fell on a school day, according to WCBS.

"We're here today to make good on a promise to our Muslim brothers and sisters that a holiday of supreme importance to the Muslim community will be recognized in our school calendar so that children can honor the holiday without missing school," the mayor said.

In 2015, the holidays are celebrated in July and on September 23 to 24, respectively. New York City schools will be closed for Eid al-Adha on the 24th, while students and teachers participating in summer school will get Eid al-Fitr tentatively scheduled to begin July 17 as a designated holiday, the mayor's office said.

City officials and Muslim leaders alike cheered de Blasio's announcement.

I'm wondering what other breaks they are taking these days from since there are a mandatory amount of days that students must be in school.

I also wonder how they are going to deal with the fact that the Islamic calender moves forward 11 days per year.

I've been out of school for many years so I don't know what the up to date policies are, but from what I have read and seen on the news many schools are moving away from saying "Merry Christmas" around December. I know many business have moved away from this as well because of the "Controversy". If that is true in and around the NYSD I wonder if they are going to keep people from saying "Eid Mubarak" since it is a greeting specifically to that holiday.

If there are any members that go to that ISD or another ISD where this is happening, what is the policy in your school concerning the saying or posting of greetings related to religious holidays?

Do you ever stop playing the victim?
You don't get to complain about being oppressed because you're being stopped from oppressing other people.

Almost everything Christians ask for is at the expense of another group of people.
Gays, Pro-choice people, stem cell researchers, and everyone they could help, science teachers who have to teach creationism, and a truck load of Africans who have AIDs because they were told contraception was sinful.

Christians are still, by far, the majority in America and it's almost impossible to get elected if you are an Atheist.

For people who follow such a genuinely brilliant, kind, loving, forgiving and tolerant man, you sure do like to hate on other groups of people a lot.

Do you know how many schools refer to it as "Winter break" because of all the commotion they were getting for calling it Christmas Break?

I do believe it is called a "holiday break" nowadays just for that reason, now had you said Easter Break, another easy rebuttal is Spring Break now. Anymore? Not that i disagree with allowing anyone to practice religion freely, or give an extended break when part of the population of students partakes in said religion. But, if you are going to make an accusation, at least back it up.
