I am currently training for Marine Corp boot camp and one of my qualification is that I have to run 3 miles under 33:00 but my goal is to run 3 miles under 20:00. However this has brought up a concern of mine, I am pretty strong and I have a nice build of muscles that are big and chiseled and It took about 4 years to get to were I am at now. The problem is a lot of people have been telling me that long distance running burns muscle and I also read articles on the internet that fall in line with what I been told. I dont want to become a "Skinny guy" from running long distance to improve my running time. Now the other side of the coin is sprinting which I have been doing since middle school for sports and other activities, I was told that sprinting allows you to keep your gains but I wont help me improve my run times for long distance. So I came here to ask you guys that have experience running which one should I do ? or just leave a vote in the poll.

This is what i train for my daily Air Force PT Test
1.5mile = 9:18
*minimum requirement 13:36*

Is i first run minimum 5 miles 2 days a week, 2 days of sprints for about 20 minutes?(Sprint the straights and walk the corners on the track)
Thats on top going to the gym 4-5 days a week and doing pushups and situps in the morning and night every day.
I promise you if you balance everything out you wont thin out and loose muscle, now if you workout at the gym for 0-1 day and run 5 days of the week for awhile, then thats a different story, you might loose a bit of muscle on the upper body.

Just look forward on doing pushups your entire time through bootcamp.
