Depends on how strong you are vs how much you weigh.

liljay685 wrote Im trying to work my way up to 30 pull ups before January so I was thinking of dropping some weight before then but I would have to burn muscle. i only have 14% body fat.

no need for dropping weight. You can do this
Get a deck of cards
Get a pullup thing for your own home
every night get 1 card 1 card = 1 pullup the next night double that 2 cards = 2 pullups the next night get 3 cards 3 cards = 3 pullups and so on eventually you will pass 5 and get to a higher amount

Yes... If you're somewhat strong and skinny it's very easy to do pull ups. Guy sounds like a tool

well as you weigh 86 more pounds than him, it's gonna be harder for you to do more than him, you're also 6 inches taller so your arms are longer which means you have to pull up more to get up. So it doesn't mean you're weak or anything. I mean i can't even do one pull up and i'm shorter than you!

I pretty sure I will see him at the gym again he is a regular and he is normally on the treadmill running but I will use this one situation as motivation.

No, It doesn't make you weak... from what it looks like you could destroy him in everything besides pull ups. And you had just finished a workout, and even if you are weaker than him everybody has to start somewhere. In the gym today I saw a 25 year old guy benching quite a bit less than I can (I'm removed) but did I say anything... NO.
tl;dr He was probably an insecure douche

If you can try to go at different times than him. That's just another suggestion.
