Just a question for all you experts out there. Me and my mate got told to go on a website and when he went on it he got booted offline and they were laughing. I'm guessing this is some sort of DDOS via a link. My questions is am I right in thinking the link booted him offline or is that impossible? Thanks!

The link he clicked just sent his IP to them and they used a DDOS software to boot him offline.

They can get your IP through the site if they own it.
Sort of an internet rule not to click on links you don't know though. Right?

Couldn't resist. There's so many ways to "attack" people via the internet and it's easy to make mistakes, we all do! Always keep your guard up bro, this should be a powerful lesson to learn from.

There's websites that create fake links and if you click on it, it will send your IP to your "friends" email. Then he'll DDoS you through his webstresser/IRC/shells/etc
