Seoul (AFP) - A top-ranking North Korean military official has threatened a nuclear strike on the White House and Pentagon after accusing Washington of raising military tensions on the Korean peninsula.
The threat came from Hwang Pyong-So, director of the military's General Political Bureau, during a speech to a large military rally in Pyongyang Sunday on the anniversary of the armistice that ended the 1950-53 Korean War.
Hwang, who holds the rank of vice marshal in the Korean People's Army, said a recent series of South Korea-US military drills, one of which included the deployment of a nuclear-powered US aircraft carrier, had ramped up tensions.
"If the US imperialists threaten our sovereignty and survival... our troops will fire our nuclear-armed rockets at the White House and the Pentagon -- the sources of all evil," Hwang said in his speech broadcast Monday on state television.
It is not the first time that North Korea's bellicose rhetoric has included threats of nuclear strikes on the continental United States and US bases in the Pacific.
But most experts believe it is still a long way from developing a viable intercontinental ballistic missile with the required range.
The North has conducted three nuclear tests, but is not thought to have mastered the miniaturisation techniques necessary for mounting a warhead on a missile.
It does possess a range of short-and mid-range missiles capable of striking South Korea and Japan, and has conducted a series of test firings into the Sea of Japan (East Sea) in recent weeks.
The latest test on Saturday -- guided by the leader Kim Jong-Un -- simulated a short-range missile strike on South Korea where 28,500 US troops are stationed, the North's state media said.
It defied censure by the UN Security Council which officially condemned Pyongyang on July 17 over the recent tests as violations of UN resolutions prohibiting the North from using ballistic missile technology.

Probably just another threat with no credibility. They will say that to make their population think that they control the world and are the strongest power in the world, their population don't have access to anything which hasn't been filtered by the government which is why they claimed to have won the world cup.

North Korean threats have a tendency to be empty. Little water balloons won't travel that far anyway ;)

North Korea has been making threats like this for almost 3 years now, it hasn't happened yet, and it never will.

Welp, another nuclear threat from North Korea that will blow over within a month or so...
No, it won't be WW3 if this were to happen. All that would happen is America and possibly South Korea would attack North Korea. North Korea has no allies that will stick with them in something like this, because almost 2 years ago when they were claiming to nuke the US, both China and Russia told North Korea to stop, both of which are "allies" of North Korea.

Very true however for a moment just humor me and supose North Korea was to attack the US. The US would immediately retaliate to assure its power. This video shows you why its important. Mind this video is quite biased but has truth.

Very true however for a moment just humor me and supose North Korea was to attack the US. The US would immediately retaliate to assure its power. This video shows you why its important. Mind this video is quite biased but has truth.This would set off a chain reaction in which other middle-eastern and strong anti-american groups would take to also attack. Next thing you know the UN is forced to take action. The middle east is not the place that wants to see the US burn, so do communist countries. Just look at Russia invading and killing innocents to gain back the Ukraine.
The thing with that is, literally, North Korea has no true allies who will back them up in a war like that. If North Korea were to attack Americans, America would attack back and I'm very certain South Korea would too, just because of how North Korea has threatened them as well.

Now, North Korea doesn't have the technology to fire a missile to the US unless it goes past Japan's side. When North Korea was making claims of nuking the US almost 2 years ago, Japan said anything fired from North Korea would be shot down and again, I'm sure South Korea would attempt to destroy anything shot from them as well. Now let's say somehow, it gets passed Japan/South Korea (which ever attempts to destroy North Korea's missile) and hits America's "net." All I see happening is America and South Korea attacking North Korea and no one else would jump into it, seeing as before some of North Korea's strongest "allies" both told them to stop. I get there are countries that hate America, but still, I literally don't see any of them aiding North Korea just because North Korea decides to jump and try and attack America. Seeing how their "allies" have been with North Korea, they won't have anyone on their side with it. The only way I see the allies of North Korea helping in an attack, is if America attacked those allies, or if the allies attacked America before North Korea and then North Korea jumps into it.
All in all, I wouldn't worry about it, it's going to be empty threats, propaganda will be started again, then the empty threats will die out and everyone will move on.
