Call of duties and grand theft autos have all been big since releases.
Therefore I would say they have been pretty successful.

It is by far Mario.

Mario is the best selling video game franchise of all time, with 445 million copies sold.

Call of Duty in comparison only has 120 million, which is below Tetris, Sonic, Need for Speed, The Sims, GTA, Wii series, Pokemon, etc. Even if you look at the Super Mario series alone and ignore all the minigames, it's still sold twice as much as COD.

COD's barely tenth if you're talking about the most successful game franchises ever. Also, almost everyone knows who Mario, Bowser, and Luigi is. But how many people really know any of the characters in COD?

I'd have to go with Nintendo titles, Mario Party, Mario Kart etc.. They all sell very well and are all great games.
