List is in no particular order:

1) SRT4 (Neon or Caliber)
2) Bugeye WRX (02/03)
3) Volkswagon GTI (MK4/MK5)

All are good starting cars for tuning. Good way to up your knowledge of cars. This is my list of cars that I was deciding between. But ultimately the WRX won my vote. Since this is my list I didn't include the hondas, because I simply do not like them. But if they appeal to you, maybe a civic Si.

or an 04 Acura TL. Its what I have they are so nice and fast for about 8-9k. They have a v6 Vtec engine in them , mine can produce 270HP but they can vary tho

The engine by its self, not running in the car , is capable but when it's in the car there's power loss due to the drivetrain and engine accessories. Your prob putting 220-230 down at the wheels and that might even be high for a guess.

Look between the main points of what you want in a car:

Coupe or sedan
4-banger, V6,V8
Transmission
Gas milage
Price

And above all practicality. If you drive around with friend you will most likey not want a coupe because I'm very Leary about ppl getting into the back seats because they like to just " hop in".

First car and $12,000 to spend?

Being a first car, I'll suggest economy cars, and also sport.

Mazda RX-8
Chevrolet Cobalt SS
Acura RSX
Infinity G35
Ford Focus
90s BMW 3 series (if you don't mind insurance and upkeep)
Mazda Miata
VW Golf
Mazda 6
Nissan 350Z.
You might be able to get a Toyota MR2 for that
(Keep in mind, some of these aren't specifically for upgrades, but for something right now)
That's enough, if I keep thinking my brain will hurt.

Remember, it's all personal preference and money here. Don't get something before checking financial situation with it, and test driving it. I suggest test driving multiple cars before making a verdict on which one you want.
