Okay so this seems a bit cruel and terrible but after being diagnosed with it you tend to realize how much people over use the term depressed to just say that they're sad.

For example the other day a friend of mine lost his "girlfriend" (they've never met) and they had only been dating for about a week and then they broke up. The very next day he's talking to me about how he's depressed and all that junk.(He knew the girl not even a month)

Okay I'm getting a bit off topic but what I'm trying to say is that people are using the word depressed to only express themselves as being sad when in reality depression is a very serious mental issue and I'm sure there is going to be that kid that says I'm being a "b*tch" about this but it's quite annoying. 90% of the people saying they're "depressed" have no clue what it's like.

All in all I just find it very annoying and i see post on facebook & tweets and it just kind of pisses me off. I just needed to get that off my chest and see if anyone feels the same way.

I agree, depression is used these days as kind of a slang for being sad, and yes it is over used in situations where it probably shouldn't be.

I personally have never been depressed, but from what I have heard from other people, it is a lot worse than just being sad.

Also, how did your friend have a girlfriend and yet they have never met, sorry but that just seems really weird to me.

I think depression is overdiagnosed and Dysthymia is underdiagnosed.
Most people who say they have depression probably have Dysthymia, there's a thin line between that and simply being pessimistic.
There was a topic in the conspiracy forum a while ago and nearly every person claimed to have depression, yet if you asked them what drugs they were on, a lot probably wouldn't be able to answer.
Depression really isn't something you can diagnose yourself with, unless you're nearly hacking your limbs off every time you feel a bit down.
I take it the same as I do in a courtroom situation, 'innocent until proven guilty.'
Normal until diagnosed.

I believe they are different stages of depression, like you can be diagnosed with depression

You could also not be diagnosed, doesnt mean you arent depressed, the word is over used but many people just believe depression is being sad and not actually a condition

Never seen someone 'claim' they have depression, heard people say they feel depressed by which they mean they are sad

I totally agree.

I haven't had the best year, with my uncle committing suicide, being stressed out with GCSEs and getting mugged, it has upset me, but some people going on about how bad their life is because they didn't get Dominos pizza last night. (Yes, people are that bad)

It's stupid.

I agree with what you're saying, but you need to understand, I think people exaggerate everything to make it seem more dramatic. I think you get depressed, though, after breaking up with a girlfriend. Maybe not as serious as the mental disorder, but many people have even committed suicide after breaking up with someone. Depression is very sad and can lead to many bad things. One thing won't change, though, and that's the fact that people will keep misusing the word.

I agree with you because there is a girl at my school who says she is depressed because "no one accepts her" No one ever said that too her and she has a good group of friends and I see her laughing everyday
