I honestly think that some people think of telling stories is like a competition of some sort. I usually like to tell stories and all of my friends always like to 1up me and tell one a little better. I then think I can beat it and tell another one and then they fire right back.

That's what I think.

Why tell stories?
We embark on this endeavor because stories are ways in which we pass down information from one generation to another. Words and language are the threads of life, and from Homer's epics to Mark Twain's Mississippi adventures, stories are way to engage the imagination of a reader or listener.

It depends on the intent of the story teller. Some, like stated, like to brag. Others, may use stories to inspire. I suppose it just depends on what their story is :p

I Think we tell Stories just to tell stories so we can start a convo

Humans are social creatures, we strive off communicating so when someone tells a story they're contributing to maintaining society.
