This is a question I've been thinking about for sometime now, and even my english teacher doesn't have an answer to this. I personally think it is to tell of an experience we've had in our life.

I want to know what you guys think.
P.S. There's no right answer to this

I honestly think that some people think of telling stories is like a competition of some sort. I usually like to tell stories and all of my friends always like to 1up me and tell one a little better. I then think I can beat it and tell another one and then they fire right back.

That's what I think.

God bless Yahoo Answers.

Why tell stories?
We embark on this endeavor because stories are ways in which we pass down information from one generation to another. Words and language are the threads of life, and from Homer's epics to Mark Twain's Mississippi adventures, stories are way to engage the imagination of a reader or listener.

Dream of Books

"Stories paint word pictures and use the sound and rhythm and repetition of words.
In developing and learning a story you should concentrate on its visual and audio aspects:
either assemble it into a series of visual pictures like a filmstrip,
or consciously absorb the rhythm and arrangement of the sounds of the words."
-- Barry McWilliams, on his website Effective Storytelling.

Dream of Books
"Maybe you're wondering why people bother telling stories. They're just for kids, aren't they? No, stories are for all people of all ages. If you read a traditional story carefully there are lessons to be learned from it. Some lessons we already know, but sometimes forget. Like being kind to those less fortunate than ourselves, or that love is truly the most important reason for us all to be here. Other stories warn us of the consequences of our actions on ourselves and others. Each story has at least one, and most of the times many, morals. Even a story you have read many times may hold yet another gem of a lesson for you to learn later, down the road. All people of all walks of life have stories, and most all of them contain lessons to be learned or remembered."

It depends on the intent of the story teller. Some, like stated, like to brag. Others, may use stories to inspire. I suppose it just depends on what their story is :p

Humans are social creatures, we strive off communicating so when someone tells a story they're contributing to maintaining society.
