Sorry, I hadn't read the other posts. On the other hand, opening your xbox isn't hard and isn't as risky as most people make it out to be. I, myself, have done it hundreds of times on both phats and slims and have never broke one. The components inside are quite resiliant to an extent but to be safe, for the first time, follow a tutorial.

But even if he does decide to open it up, he would need the proper tools to update the nand, the best option would be for him to send it in to update the nand. He would need Original Nand and CPU Key.

You guys, there's only two ways in my knowledge of knowing how to update your dash, the USB way, or the opening your console option.
