"You can go anywhere you want in this world with just a single blade. This may be a virtual world, but I feel more alive here than in the real world." Judging from this first quote, I'm sure you could gather a rough idea of what the main character of Sword Art Online, Kiragaya "Kirito" Kazuto, is like. Sword Art Online, also just referred to as SAO, has absolutely exploded in popularity recently. It's become so possible and money grossing that I'm almost nervous to write this review. So does SAO deliver what it'd be like to be trapped in a virtual world, or does it try to patch up plot holes sloppily? Stay tuned to this review to find out.

The plot of Sword Art Online is very similar to the old show .Hack//Sign, in the sense of a player being trapped in a virtual world. Unlike .Hack//Sign however, it is not one single person trapped, but over 10,000. The main character, Kirito, is a hardcore gamer who puts so much into his games. This is when a game, "Sword Art Online" is set to come out, being the first VRMMORPG (Virtual Reality Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game). When all the eager gamers enter the game, they find that their "Log Out" button is missing from the in-game menus. The developer of the game appears before them all, informing them that if they die in the game, the NervGear (the virtual reality helmets they have on while playing) will explode, effectively killing them. This causes an uproar among the gamers and sets up the plot for the first half of the show. The main character is nothing special, and many have called him flat out boring. The female lead, Asuna, is a more than decent enough character for the position.

Now with a brief synopsis out of the way, we can focus on the actual content of SAO. First off, the animation and graphics. Being made in 2012, the animation is very smooth even during fast fights, and the graphics are very fine tuned and pleasing to the eyes. But what is good animation without a good story? This is unfortunately one of the parts where SAO drifts off a bit. The first half of the 25 episode series is the players trying to survive in Aincrad, the world in which they are trapped. This is an extremely interesting set of arcs, since it very accurately portrays how gamers act, and it feels insanely realistic in a sense. Ways in which it portrays how gamers act include PK (player killer) guilds (even though they know they are literally killing them), players that are too scared to leave the first town, and players that party up and steal gear to do boss fights. Being a gamer myself, I recognized every gamer mannerism that popped up on the way. The first half of Sword Art Online may just be one of my favorite things I've ever watched. This however, changes halfway through.

Warning, this part is a semi-spoiler, so if you have not watched yet, you may want to avoid this section. I will try my best to not give any specific details of plot however. ALO, or Alfheim Online, is the second VRMMORPG that Kirito gets involved in (for reasons I won't explain for spoiler sake). ALO is a fantasy game, so the player races are things such as dwarves, spriggans, and undines. The setting of ALO feels absolutely fine, but it's the underlying plot that just feels "ok" at best. This is where many people started dropping Sword Art Online, and if I had not read the books prior to it, I may have been one of them. The entry to ALO arcs are already, but the middle episodes were exceptionally boring and really not that beneficial to the story. It did however, end out very well and ultimately led the series to finish out strong.

Sword Art Online has gotten hyped beyond belief over the past year or so, and it really doesn't show any signs of stopping with a potential second season on the horizon. This series really appears to gamers the most, and if you are a dedicated gamer, I would by all means recommend this series to you. It doesn't really contain too many stereotypical anime aspects that turn many people away, so it's a great series to start on. SAO is only subbed right now, but the rights to an English dub have long been bought and it may roll out soon. Let's end this review with a quote from Sword Art Online shall we? "If we make it back to the real world,I'll find you. And fall in love with you all over again"

* Read the Light Novels, they are MUCH better and less rushed. PM -Kyou- for a link to them

Soul Eater

Ahh Soul Eater, a show that pretty much every anime enthusiast has at least looked into. Not much can be said about Soul Eater except that it is a show that should checked out if you have the time. It is available dubbed on Netflix and even on Comcast OnDemand once in a while. Let's jump straight into a brief synopsis.

In the world of Soul Eater, there are 3 main types of common supernatural beings. Meisters, Weapons, and Witches are all a huge main part of the story, seeing as 3 main protagonists are meisters, and 4 are weapons. Basically, every Meister has a Weapon, and their goal is to reap 99 corrupted souls, and let their Weapon eat it, after which if they eat a single Witch soul, they become a Death Scythe, a personal tool of the Grim Reaper himself. We follow 3 sets of main characters throughout the show. First is Maka and Soul, more than arguable the main pair. Maka is a very well rounded studious girl, and Soul is sort of a punk scythe who always tries to keep it cool. The next set is Black Star, a loud-mouthed survivor of an infamous assassin family that was wiped out, and his Weapon, Tsubaki, who is a well mannered quiet girl who turns into multiple ninja weapons. The last set is the Grim Reaper's son himself, Death the Kid, an OCD ridden boy with twin pistols, Patty and Liz.

Next up is the presentation of Soul Eater. The animation and art style is truly a selling point of this series. It has a cartoony, gothic feel that is both creepy and hilariously warped. It's not uncommon to see buildings with mismatched windows, strangely thrown together rooms, and especially weird decorations. If this fresh art style isn't enough for you, fear not since the fighting segments of Soul Eater are fantastic as well. Everything down to the way Maka swings Soul feels right during the fights, with special effects sprinkled in just enough to not be overbearing. Now that I've covered the appearance of Soul Eater, onto the plot. I found Soul Eater to be a show I had to watch twice to truly appreciate. The first time around I was watching it subbed and just got very sick of the filler episodes. The second time however, I watched and dubbed, which I thoroughly enjoyed the entire thing for. Not saying the dub is better than the sub, but it was just a bit easier and most the voices fit pretty well. The plot takes a bit to pick up, especially since it is a school-like setting and they must learn how to become compatible with another, the Weapons and their Meisters that is. Along the way, throwing in some dark sequences and episodes really made Soul Eater a lot more interesting watch. I was also very satisfied with the ending of this show.

Yes, Soul Eater may have some extra fluff in there that isn't necessary in the slightest (cough cough, Excalibur), but even these filler episodes surprisingly don't take too much pacing out of the show. Would I watch this show again? Maybe, but that really comes down to having enough time to watch a whopping 51 episodes. Overall, I could safely recommend Soul Eater as a starting series for someone new to anime, since it remains entertaining throughout. For more experienced anime watchers however, this show is unfortunately outdone by some other shows as far as dark plots and fighting scenes, but is still a show that should not be missed.

Hunter x Hunter is an anime you should check out if you haven't seen it. It's a great series that I think should get just as much attention as the big 3 (Naruto, Bleach, One Piece). Lots of strategy in the fights and lovable characters for both the good and bad side. Just gonna throw in the fact that Hisoka is my favorite bad guy ever right behind Itachi (Naruto) if you count him... cuz you know.... Not gonna spoil but you get it if you watch the show.

I hear the original is way better than the new one, can you confirm this?

So everyone, how y'all doing? Haven't been watching too much currently airing stuff since just cruising around with older shows. Hopefully I can push out guide build 1.5.0 (that's what its up to now right? Teehee) and get it to Linx today, really just adding in the recent reviews for that section as well as cutting out Linx's old section as for his request.

Just finished Angel Beats. I thought it was pretty good to be honest, a lot of unexpected things happened, was very sad at times. Got a bit funny with all the shadows at the end but a good watch, I fully recommend this anime.

Ahh Angel Beats, now there's a show I keep forgetting to make a review for the front page. Pretty much everyone here has watched it, due to some things you said. It perfectly blending a bunch of different moods and emotions together and made the story really spin all over the place in a great way. The humor may just be my favorite part as well, since it's always present between TK and Hinata (who I still call Tomoya by the way).

Haven't really seen you too much on this thread before, care to post your MAL list to compare?
