Hey Lemons, there have been many reports online and in many topics/ forums on the internet from Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 users whom are experiencing freezing/crashing during online and offline play of Grand Theft Auto 5. GTA 5 freezing issues have been noticed by Rockstar, but no major patch has been released that fixes the majority of these issues in this triple-A title so far.

Word of software problems have been constantly developing ever since GTA 5 was released on September 17th, 2013.

So, whats a Lemon gotta do to relieve these issues? Thats where Lemon_ comes in.

If you are experiencing freezing/crashing problems with GTA 5; check out my list of fixes below to try to remedy your issue.

Warning: Its important to note that these solutions are not guaranteed to work, as every system/setup/location/version for each user in question varies. There is still a strong chance these points below can definitely help you, or at least strongly educate you. Furthermore, these points may/may not provide fixes to any other technical issues in relation to GTA V; such as save-data problems, glitching, lagging, audio-dropouts or cut-scene issues.

Fixes for PS3/Xbox 360 Physical Disc & Downloaded GTA 5 users

If you are a physical disc user of GTA 5, start reading below.

If you have downloaded your copy of GTA 5, start reading at Step 4.

>>>> First, we need to determine whether the freezing/crashing issue is with the GTA 5 disc or with your PS3/Xbox 360. From my experience, most freezing/crashing issues are actually system related. Steps 1 3 cover remedies that evolve out of a damaged copy of GTA 5. If you are completely certain your GTA 5 disc is in perfect/near-perfect condition, start on Step 4. If the processes in Step 4 fail, you most likely have a bad disc, and should review Steps 1 3. <<<<

Steps to go through to determine whether your freezing/crashing issues are disc related:

STEP 1:

Does the readable side of the disc contain visible scratches or dust? If soclean the disc with a dry cloth or use a professional cleaning solution to clean the disc, then try again. If cleaning the disc, or if the disc contains unrepairable damage, this may be the cause of your game issues and you may need to acquire an undamaged copy of GTA 5. Please note that Rockstar has a 90 day warranty on all new copies of GTA 5 sold. If the disc is not playing and is free of damages, scratches and dust, the game can be returned/exchanged at the original retailer in which you purchased it from (if you have the original receipt).

If after cleaning the disc the game still does not run without freezing/crashing, then continue to Step 2:

STEP 2:

Do you have at least temporary access to another PS3 system? This step may be difficult for some players, especially if you dont own another system or know a near-by friend who does. If you do, I would highly recommend trying to play your GTA 5 disc in another system to see if it reproduces the same issues. If you do not have access to another system, continue on to Step 3 next. If you have issues in another system, read this:

GTA 5 Freezing Crashing Issues: If the game runs through the same freezing/crashing issues on another system, attempt to clean the disc again. If after cleaning the disc again issues still exist on multiple consoles running the same disc, there is a strong possibility that the actual disc is damaged, whether the damage is visible or not. It is recommended to replace the disc if you want to continue playing GTA 5.

Please note that Rockstar has a 90 day warranty on all new copies of GTA 5 sold. If the disc is not playing and is free of damages, scratches and dust, the game can be returned/exchanged at the original retailer in which you purchased it from (if you have the original receipt).

STEP 3:

For step 3, you need to rent, borrow or buy (then resell) another copy of GTA 5. I understand this sounds tedious, but trying out another copy of GTA 5 on your system can be very beneficial in determining the cause of the issue.

If this new disc is still causing freezing/crashing issues in your system, then your console may be the issue. Continue on to Step 4.
If the new disc does not cause freezing/crashing issues like your original copy did, then your problem is with your original disc. It is up to you what you want to do with the original disc. Please note that Rockstar has a 90 day warranty on all new copies of GTA 5 sold. If the disc is not playing and is free of damages, scratches and dust, the game can be returned/exchanged at the original retailer in which you purchased it from (if you have the original receipt).

STEP 4:

At this point, the freezing/crashing issues associated with your copy of GTA 5 are likely console-related. Many different factors can lead to software (GTA 5) problems. Step 4 focuses on cleaning up your system/software files to prevent software freezing/crashing from taking place.

Note: Its important to know that Rockstar recommends contacting Microsoft or Sony for fixing console-related issues. But, you dont have time for that, do you? So, continue reading

Lets get a common misconception out of the way before we continue:

Increasing the size of your systems HDD will increase/improve game performance, and/or will reduce freezing/crashing issues with games.GTA 5 Freezing

This is not true. Adding a bigger HDD will not help a freezing or crashing issue.

All a bigger HDD will do is give you more space to store games, media and data. Game performance is not determined by the size of your HDD. Still, at least 10% free-space is recommended for any HDD, whether it is in a computer or console.

HDD is only used when installing the game, installing extra content and when the game is performing a game save.

With that aside, lets continue:

If youre on Xbox 360:

Warning: This method is not guaranteed to work. If you are uncomfortable doing any of the following to your system, resort to contacting Microsoft for assistance. Here is Microsofts support center for the Xbox 360 and Xbox One systems.

Xbox Support have posted a recommended fix if you are having console related freezing/crashing issues. They recommend doing the following (excluding the first pointIve added this point for your protection, if you want to keep up with your game save):

Make sure your game save data is being backed up in Xbox Lives Cloud for game saves. If you do not have/use this service, make sure you back up your game save on a USB flash drive (the USB flash drive, as per Xbox 360 conditions, MUST BE be between 1 and 16 GB in size, must be formatted for Fat32, and the flash drive must be empty).
Delete all GTA 5 game data
Clear system cache 3 times (press Y when you have selected the storage device to do so)
Delete Marketplace data from storage system items
Unplug Xbox 360 for three minutes
Install GTA 5 Disc 1
Power off
Turn system back on, then restart
Install GTA 5 Disc 2

If youre on Playstation 3:

Warning: This method is not guaranteed to work, but has worked for many people. If you are uncomfortable doing any of the following to your system, resort to contacting Sony directly for assistance. Here is Sonys official support center for the Playstation 3 & 4.

Perform a safe-mode clean:

Firstly, make sure your game saves are being backed up via Playstation Plus. If you are not a PS+ subscriber, or if you do not use PS+s game save backup service; back up your game saves on a USB flash drive.
Now we will remove the GTA 5 game data from your PS3. Game data is NOT the same as games saves. Game data contains information like in-game preferences/setting. In the XMB menu go to GAME then select the folder GAME DATA UTILITY. Highlight the game data utility file for GTA 5. Press the TRIANGLE button, then select DELETE.
Next in the same folder; delete the GTA 5 install file (the big 8+ GB file). You probably remember downloading this from the disc/PSN upon first attempting to play the game. This file contains a huge assortment of details and models the game accesses during gameplay. DELETING THIS FILE will not cause any issues with GTA 5, because the game will simply re-download this data after we have cleaned your system. Removing these 2 GTA 5 files before cleaning is a necessary process
Now, press & hold the power button until the system beeps 3 times (during a period of 10 seconds), and then powers down.
Press & hold the power button again. Wait until the system beeps 4 times.
You should see an on-screen message now. If you dont, try again from the top. If you do, plug in your wireless controller (via USB cable) and press the PS button on controller.
Select option 3 on the screen:
Restore File System (note: this will not delete data off of your system unless the date is corrupted. If a game save is corrupted, it will be deleted).
After option 3 has done its thing, give GTA 5 a whirl and let it download the appropriate data to your PS3 then see if your game freezes again.

DIDNT WORK? OK. lets try a different safe-mode option:

Press & hold the power button until the system beeps 3 times (during a period of 10 seconds), and then powers down.

Press & hold the power button again. Wait until the system beeps 4 times.
You should see an on-screen message now. If you dont, try again from the top. If you do, plug in your wireless controller (via USB cable) and press the PS button on controller.

Select option 4 on the screen: Rebuild Database. Rebuilding the database may delete corrupted data that Step 3 failed to remove. Still, outside of corrupted data, rebuilding the database will not remove system saves/data (again, unless this particular data is corrupted), excluding messages and playlists (both will be deleted). Rebuilding the Database may take several hours. Do not disturb your system during this process. Unfortunately there will be nothing shown on your TV during the database rebuild, but if you want to check to see if it is still running; just look at the green light on the front of your PS3, if its flickering; the rebuild is still happening.

After option 4 has ran through its paces, try to play GTA 5 again and see what happened!

If none of the above steps have helped you: I would recommend returning the game, or wait until Rockstar provides a patch to help users such as yourself. GTA 5 includes a 90-day warranty. Return it to the retailer you purchased it from. Note that an update could take months to years to be released. Complaints are pretty strong when it comes to GTA 5. Rockstar is listening and have provided a (pretty poor) guide of their own, which I have expanded on this article. The link to this guide can be found below. Though, their guide and others have not helped everyone. I am still in the process of researching this issue and will update this article accordingly.

P.S I DO NOT TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY PROBLEMS/ISSUES THAT HAVE OCCURRED THROUGH YOUR ACTIONS OR NOT AFTER FOLLOWING THIS GUIDE, I AM TRYING TO HELP NOT TAMPER! ALSO THESE STEPS ARE NOT GUARANTEED TO WORK. THANKYOU

Hope this becomes a STICKY so that it can help out everyone in the forums.
