Synopsis
LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game is an action-adventure game that brings the Pirates of the Caribbean world and all its colourful characters to life in LEGO Brick form. Players will experience all the memorable scenes from the first three films, as well as those in the upcoming fourth film, "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," in the humorous and quirky LEGO Video Games style.

Story
On picking this up we're made immediately aware that those of us not having watched the Pirates of the Caribbean movies beforehand will be lost as to the plot on this game - the developers definitely made a couple of assumptions going into this; everybody has seen the movies (not too far off the mark), and everybody knows what LEGO is (again, not too much of a stretch there). So for the majority of the market this won't be an issue - let's move on. The game recreates the story from the movie trilogy, with some obvious cuts and edits to make it all fit into a single plot. There are no character voices so interactions and plot progression are handled by charades, grunts and pointing - since the objectives are fairly simple however it works out quite well.

Gameplay
Designed for a younger audience the tasks and objectives are pretty basic and don't take long to accomplish. In general the gameplay is easy fun, and saturated with your stereotypical LEGO jokes (a throw sword cuts a pair of LEGO legs off, an explosion turns a normal LEGO character into a skeleton LEGO character, and when a boat crashes the LEGO pieces dismantle).
In each level you will start with one or two characters and find at least another couple along the way that can be played as - you can chose which member of your party you wish to play as through a character wheel which is displayed at the top left of the screen. Following each level you are presented with a panel of characters that you will get to play as during the game (there's 70 in total). In game you must progress through levels by completing a number of obstacles (find wheels for a cart, find carrots for a horse, or find a pulley for crank) to ultimately recreate one of the scenes depicted in the films.
If you have a friend along you can also join forces in the two-player cooperative mode to complete these challenges and recreate the movies together.

Graphics
Being a game based on LEGO the graphics are simplistic, but still very well done (expect nothing less when Disney sticks its label on something). The plastic effect is realistic to the point of being lifelike (during the cut scenes at least) - as are the LEGO facial expressions on characters. The graphic developers did take the LEGO element too far in some respects though are some background and utility elements (cranks, fruit, tools) were more blocky and unrefined than actually LEGO.

Controls
The controls are very simple - the entire game could be conducted with 3 buttons (hit, jump and action). But in the case of LEGO Pirates this just supplements the easy fun foundation that the game was based on - it's definitely a game aimed at either younger or inexperienced gamers to bring them into the fray!

i disagree completely..i actually picked this one up just cause i was big on legos when i was little and i love the pirates movies, they bring about a sense of nostalgia, and i loved the game. I thought it followed the movie well, and the controls were basic and it prompted what button to press at most objectives. personally i enjoyed this game, coming from a 17 year old. lol, 8/10

I find it inappropriate to review any LEGO adventure game unless you have played it very thouroughly. You might not know, but these LEGO games take a veryyyyyy long time to get most of the in game completions. The suprising thing is that after playing it for a while, it does not get repetative and usually remains fun. The extreme replay value and amount of clocked hours you will put into this will actually accumulate usually, so that's why I tend to like any new LEGO game. (Although I do hardly play them anymore, fyi).

I enjoy the fact that, although they are LEGO games, they are very thorough and in-depth for more mature players. It really adds more fun to the game for someone who enjoys LEGO games but wants a little bit more. I personally haven't played this game yet but is it pretty much like all of the other games?
